Dale,
What underinsured hull implications do you refer to?
I've found the insurance people to have a policy of "honor among thieves."
That is, if you have a quote or an active insurance policy, they will not
talk to you or give you a quote. I've told them I will cancel my current policy
if they would give me a quote. They refuse! They have an unwritten rule
amongst themselves to not step on each others toes. Seems almost like
collusion to keep prices high and create a sort of monopoly.
Stan Sutterfield
One other important point, are you aware of the implications of under
insuring the hull? Also, once you contact one of the insurance agents
and get a quote, the competions for your business ends. All other agents
will be blocked by the insurance companies to quote on your needs.

Stan, if you have hull insurance say $20K for an aircraft worth say
$100k (therefore you are "underinsured") and are in an repairable
accident, the following could legally happen. If the salvage/resale
value of the hull is worth more than your $20K policy then the insurance
company can declare your hull "Totaled", pay you, your $20k, take
possession and sell the aircraft for it true "salvage" value of say
$75K. So instead of a loss to the insurance company they make a
"profit" of $55K on you accident. Not bad, eh?
I have hear of this happening but have no ideal whether this practice is
prevalent or not - you wouldn't think so, but with insurance companies
you never know. In any case, many believe it is better to have no hull
insurance rather than be "underinsured".

I see that Ed Anderson already gave you an excellent explanations of the
possible consequence of under insuring the hull. NationAir made sure I
understood this when I first had to decide on the level of hull
insurance. Thanks to the RVlist I was aware of the ramifications.
The refusal of quotes was explained to me by an RV builder/insurance
agent on the RVlist a few years ago. His explanation: When you work with
an agent, they will contact the various insurance companies for pricing
and availability of your insurance needs. After the initial quote to an
agent, the insurance company would just be giving the same quote for the
same circumstance to all the other agents that contact them. The one
exception is Avemco as they deal direct.

And I will use the gentlemen term loosely.
I finalizing the sale of my Europa today and have been looking at lots of
ads on Barnstormers and Trade A Plane for an RV-6A or RV-7A to fill that
soon to be vacant spot in my hangar. Needless to say I have lots of
questions and don't think it would be fair to the group to ask all my "want

My final goal is an aircraft that will be easy for my wife and grand
daughter to learn to fly in and that will let me do light IFR here in the
southeast. Besides all the normal go fast and looks great aspects of these

So with that said, who or whom would like to step up to the plate and let me
bend their ear about these wonderful aircraft you all operate.

If you are not into acro, you might want to look at a -9A. They make a
great X-C plane, haul a ton, are just about as fast as the 6's and 7's
and cost more than a 6 but typically less than a 7.
As for bending our ears, everything you read about them is true. That's

Seriously, there are several factors that are considered when quoting
insurance on an airplane.
Owners total flying experience, time in type, type of airplane, where is
the airplane based, paved or grass runway, passed history of claims and
maybe the age of the primary pilot. One of my neighbor told me last
weekend that he is considering selling his Bonanza because of operating
cost with insurance being a primary factor because he is now 75.

Steve,
There is an RV for you. Just decide what you want to do with it... cross
country, IFR, acro, formation.. all of the above! Seriously, do an honest
evalution of what you want from an airplane then let us bend your ear. the
ball is in your court; what do you want/need to do?

Steve,
If you are not into acro, you might want to look at a -9A. They make a
great X-C plane, haul a ton, are just about as fast as the 6's and 7's and
cost more than a 6 but typically less than a 7.
As for bending our ears, everything you read about them is true. That's why
there are so many of the things flying.

Gentlemen and Ladies,
And I will use the gentlemen term loosely.
I finalizing the sale of my Europa today and have been looking at lots of
ads on Barnstormers and Trade A Plane for an RV-6A or RV-7A to fill that
soon to be vacant spot in my hangar. Needless to say I have lots of
questions and don't think it would be fair to the group to ask all my "want
to be" questions on the forum.
My final goal is an aircraft that will be easy for my wife and grand
daughter to learn to fly in and that will let me do light IFR here in the
southeast. Besides all the normal go fast and looks great aspects of these
aircraft.
So with that said, who or whom would like to step up to the plate and let me
bend their ear about these wonderful aircraft you all operate.
Thanks,
Steve Crimm

It's still collusion. Have you ever heard an independent insurance agent
for homeowners, automotive, etc insurance tell you that?
You can bet that the same underwriters (meaning the actual insurance
companies, not the person sitting at the desk) give multiple agents
quotes on the same property every day when they are working in other fields.
I equate it to Lyc/Cont engine prices; they do it because they can.
BTW, don't let them convince you that the high rates are due to
'liability', either. If the issue was liability, then why is $1M of
liability only around $300-$400/yr, but $30K of hull is over twice that
premium?
