Bill,
I do a lot of search and buying of electronic components - do you have a
part number as I do find Alps encoders on the net just not certain which
specific one you require??

Believe it or not, on a lark, I took the darn thing out of the panel and
laid it open: broken outer shaft on the concentric encoder switch was the
problem. Easily unsoldered, removed, opened the switch body. Lots of
teenie weenie innards. Jeweler's loupes were brought out. Shaft is brass -
was able to silver solder the thing back together and re-assemble the switch
(if you saw it you would not beleive it was possible to do in a home
workshop). Put the radio back in the panel and it worked! (Past tense).
Naturally, the solder joint failed after the first few minutes of playing
with it, so now it's back to broken status. I'd rather discover this on the
ground than on a X/C. I kinda thought it would happen - solder is not a
structural material, really. Too bad Icom won't sell me the $25 part (Alps
3-gang rotary encoder) and I cannot find it on the 'net. The avionics
monopoly wins this round.
Well, I now have two hours of my time in this thing, about enough to buy a
new one, so I'm done messing around, but it was a fun exercise. I might
open a watch repair business on the side, as I discovered talents and
patience I didn't know I had.

A few weeks back I loaded a heavy, folding shade tent into the pax seat of
my RV-6A to take to a neighbor's fly-in event, in the process bumping the
tuning knob of my Icom A200 radio and bending its shaft. The radio has
since stopped responding to turning the outer ring (MHz) selector, and needs
repair.
I'm not afraid to try this repair myself if I can get my hands on a
replacement concentric optical shaft encoder that is a proper fit, nor
opposed to sending the radio off for repair by an avionics shop is I can

Any help out there?

I can certainly understand your frustration, you know the problem, you can
affect the solution - except! Here is one more set that appears to have
some different encoders from ALPS. Take a look at the stackable Grey
encoder.

Ed,
I'd say it's definitely one of the RK097 series, 9mm horizontal, but with
three gangs and two concentric shafts, the center one having a pull-on
switch function (to select .0125 MHz tuning steps). I don't see one like
that in the listings.

Ok, Bill. You want ganged - here you are. Actually, it's the only ones I
could find. But, from your description I presume the encoder looks
something like these?
