Subject: | RV8A Weight and balance |
I weighed my RV8A and was somewhat surprised at the results.- I have a Su
perior O-360 normally aspirated engine, Sensenich fixed pitch propeller, an
d forward mounted lightweight battery.- The empty weight worked out to 10
80 lb with a CG at 74.8" (as measured using a datum 70" forward of the lead
ing edge).- With only the pilot (220 lb) on board, I need between 20 and
30 lb of ballast in the rear baggage compartment to be within the acceptabl
e CG with maximum or minimum fuel respectively.- Is this typical for an 8
A?- With a fixed pitch propeller and lightweight battery I was expecting
to be not quite so nose heavy.- Have others had similar results?
-
Thanks in advance for your help.

Craig,
I'd double-check those numbers.. I seriously doubt you're that much off..
Did you use these:
Main wheel right: 94.06" aft of Datum
Main wheel left: 94.06" aft of Datum
Nose Wheel: 34.55" aft of Datum
What was the weight distribution? Can you post the numbers? I also assume
the plane was weighted longerons leveled w/ closed canopy etc etc..
Maybe this spreadsheet would help:
http://www.rv8a.com/downloads/RV-W
<http://www.rv8a.com/downloads/RV-W&B.xls> &B.xls
PS.. Just for fun, I used my numbers for weight on each wheel, using the
above arms and I got 78.76" empty C.G at 1081 lbs.. which is more in-line
with what'd be expected..
Good luck..
Radomir

Craig,
One other question, was your -8A level, both fore and aft as well as left
and right, when you weighed it?
