This should have probably gone out to the SE list with temps dropping down like they have. I was hoping to get out and try this but I was kind enough to pass along the cold I had last week to Nora so I'm watching The Boy today. Bill From: Bill Repucci [mailto:bill@repucci.com] Sent: Friday, January 16, 2009 10:17 PM OK, I finally got motivated tonight and made an inexpensive pre-heater. Now to test it out. You have me beat on the budget aspect of it, but I prefer the Reiff preheat system I had on the RV-8. I plan to do the same on the RV-7. Up-front cost and hassle are a little greater, but after that it's just a drop cord through the oil door. I left it plugged in all the time when the average temps were in the 40s or less. Blanket over the cowl and cowl plugs too. http://bowenaero.com/mt/2004/11/preheat-installed.html Cheers, -- Larry Bowen Larry@BowenAero.com http://BowenAero.com On Sat, Jan 17, 2009 at 11:14 AM, Bill Repucci <bill@repucci.com> wrote: > This should have probably gone out to the SE list with temps dropping > down like they have. > > > I was hoping to get out and try this but I was kind enough to pass along > the cold I had last week to Nora so I'm watching The Boy today. > > > Bill > > > *From:* Bill Repucci [mailto:bill@repucci.com] > *Sent:* Friday, January 16, 2009 10:17 PM > > OK, I finally got motivated tonight and made an inexpensive pre-heater. > Now to test it out. > > > Scroll all the way to the bottom of this page for details and pictures: > > > http://www.repucci.com/bill/things_to_consider.html#Inexpensive%20Engine%20Pre-Heater > > > Bill > > * > > * > >

Bill, I will stuff the duct up between the exhaust pipes. I had been propping the heater up on that small stepladder, which did a good job to heat the engine, not as good as what Larry has but it worked. My thinking is this will get more hot air into the cowling. That looks simple enough. How are you going to attach it to the engine? Bret, I took the other end and stuffed it in the cowling between the exhaust pipes. Saturday afternoon when I first turned it on, my EMS showed the oil temp was 30 degrees F. 35 minutes later, it was up to 44. That was done with the cowl plugs in place and an old flannel bed sheet over the cowling.
