First is a lightweight shorty good for the first of the cool season with water temps dropping into the low 70's. Next is a full one piece suit made of a very flexible material with taped and sealed seams. It lets me ride with water temps down into the mid 50's. For colder than that, I use a dry suit. What you'll need will depend on the water temps you're most likely to encounter. Wet suits come in many different thicknesses and quality of materials. For scuba diving I wore the thicker materials to keep warm because they were cheaper and I didn't need a lot of movement. For action sports, a thinner material with waterproof seams made of one of the ultra flexible materials will keep you just as warm if not warmer without wearing you out trying to move. They are more expensive, but well worth the extra money. Proper fit is also very important. I tried on several before finding one that fit me well. With the proper fit and the taped (waterproof) seams, water stays completely out of my suit unless I'm sitting in the water. For quick excursions in and out the water doing tricks, I stay very dry and warm. Bottom line; determine the most likely water temps you will encounter and purchase the thinnest, most flexible suit your budget will allow covering that temperature range. Since you mentioned Lake Michigan, a flexable full one piece with sealed seams is likely the best place to start. I need help selecting/purchasing a wet suit for kite boarding. This would b e for cool weather days on the sea coast and cold water lakes (like Lake Mi chigan) Are there different fabrics/materials used to make wet suits?...if so what should I be considering? What weight material would I need/want? Should I purchase a one piece suit or top and bottom? Any other considerations I should be thinking about? My plan is to fly my RV-6A to the hot spots for kite boarding...day trips a nd maybe some overnights. Anybody else have an interest?
