Your welcome to take a look at mine. I'm based at 5W5 just south of
Raleigh.
I've found on my panel that everything on the right 1/3 of the panel is
difficult to see and use especially in flight. My radios are fine, but the
EFIS, CB's and IPOD (not shown) are a pain to read and adjust even in slight
turbulence. I pull the electronic aproach plates up on my right screen
during instrument approaches, but they are not ideal since they are so far
away. Adjusting a radio at that distance would probably be equally
annoying.
My suggestion for your panel is to squeeze everything together more if
possible. This would obviously require different equipment choices, but
maybe just opting for smaller EFIS screens. I've found that using the 3
view on my AFS display works really well for me and doesn't seem too small.
With two small screens you would have even more room than I do on one screen
split into EFIS, Engine Mon., and Map.

Hey Greg (and everyone)
I've actually seen your panel plenty of times at EAA 1114 and at the
Mid-Atlantic Fly-in, etc.
It's a great panel, but it was only after this weekend, when I actually go
to sit in an RV-7(
http://n999za.wordpress.com/2010/06/27/sat-in-my-first-rv-7/) that I've
realized how close the panel is to the pilot. The proximity (while
not necessarily a bad thing) definitely does make the angle of view to the
right side of the panel pretty large (small?). Unless things are anlged
toward the pilot, you are absolutely right...they won't be that usable for
flight-critical information.
I am now thinking about down-sizing to some 7-inch screens, both left of the
radio stack, which can now be moved closer to center, or moving the stack to
the center, and putting a 10-inch screen on either side, directly in front
of each seat (A great example of this layout, with the SkyViews, is on the
VAF frontpage today...
http://vansairforce.net/delete_eventually/9fd8g98fdg8g7.jpg) The question
now is will teh engine monitoring stuff be usable on the left quarter of the
copilot display, or will it need to be on the right quarter of the pilot
display. (And is the moving map usable enough over there. I don't want a
setup like this if I end up putting all three on the pilot's PFD all the
time.)
Most importantly, the far right side of the panel does not seem like an
ideal place for a backup display (as shown in my original concept). That'll
have to come over to the left side of the panel somewhere.
The best thing is...I am still at least two years away from actually
starting on the panel. There will be all new equipment out by then, and
you'll all get to see me ponder this stuff again at that time. Lucky you
guys...
Now, I need to finish up this trim tab so I can start on the wings
(sloooooow buuuuuiiiiiiild) in August.
Thank you to everyone for listening, and a special thank you to David Lee
for letting me come see his airplane yesterday (and all of the rest of you
for your offers, as well...I still might take you up on them!)
