There's places i could probably ded-reckon to within a mile of but never locate the runway without the GPS pointing the way... you should see RVers trying to find my runway even with it... lining up on the neighbor's strip even with the GPS telling them it's a half-mile over that-a-way the whole time :-) As a group, we've gotten pathetic in our map and compass skills. As a pilot without VOR or DG (and often without paper charts), I have floated to the upper, most pathetic level, within the group. No way would I attempt to finish a long x/c with a busted GPS, even if it meant RON in a hotel somewhere waiting on UPS to bring a replacement. That's just the way it is anymore.
