The Charlotte EAA Chapter had a navigation contest (with prizes) for a couple of years. No electronic nav aids of any kind allowed in flight.... Only for preflight planning. I think we had 4 or 5 airplanes the first couple of years. The last year we tried to hold the event we had only 2 airplanes/teams enter. It appears most of us have gotten lazy about maintaining the skills and now we are intimidated by the challange. Especially when someone is watching us. For me, it was still fun and satisfying when we successfully found the waypoints and came close to our planned fuel burn for the total fligjt. And it refreshed the skills. But, I admit, when it comes down to getting somewhere, i depend on the GPS. However, I no longer carry my old GPS as a back-up. There's places i could probably ded-reckon to within a mile of but never locate the runway without the GPS pointing the way... you should see RVers trying to find my runway even with it... lining up on the neighbor's strip even with the GPS telling them it's a half-mile over that-a-way the whole time :-) As a group, we've gotten pathetic in our map and compass skills. As a pilot without VOR or DG (and often without paper charts), I have floated to the upper, most pathetic level, within the group. No way would I attempt to finish a long x/c with a busted GPS, even if it meant RON in a hotel somewhere waiting on UPS to bring a replacement. That's just the way it is anymore. From: Bill Boyd I might add that the main reason I feel so apprehensive about GPS-less navigation (and I should specify moving-map-less navigation) is the proliferation of restricted and special use airspace, and the penalties for violation thereof. I have no desire to brush a class B or bust a hot restricted area trying to thread the needle in central Florida and wind up in cuffs. Even CLT is close enough to be a perpetual obstacle to my typical x/c planning, and I don't act like DC airspace even exists for me anymore. There's nothing there I need to visit that badly. So - when are we converging on Carthage next? Seemed for awhile like it always conflicted with formation practice day. -Stormy On Sat, Jan 22, 2011 at 10:12 AM, Dale Ensing wrote: > The Charlotte EAA Chapter had a navigation contest (with prizes) for a > couple of years.
