For those who don't know Roland Gilliam, he is a WW1 buff who owns and flies
a full scale SE5 replica. In addition he owns and operates the Gilliam
McConnell Carthage (5NC3) airfield where our favorite BBQ restaurant is
located and is an all-around good guy.
Roland has been working on moving this monument from downtown Carthage to
the airport for some time to a location where it will be seen and
appreciated.

Bill,
Please pass on to your Team RV that the dedication of the James Rogers
McConnell monument is set for March 19, 2011. It would be nice if they
could perform at the dedication.
In case you are not aware of it. I'll explain.
I finally got approval from the Carthage Town Board to move a WW1 monument
from a location in Carthage to a location near the windsock at my airport.
The monument is a bronze plaque about 3 ft. x 4 ft. mounted on a large
granite stone. The text is written in French. I am putting a translation as
well as a short history of McConnell next to the monument. The official
dedication is set for 1 PM on Saturday March 19th. I anticipate a lot of
media coverage. I am not charging for this so my funds are limited, as this
is costing me several thousand dollars. If they could donate a fly by it
would really be appreciated.
James McConnell left Carthage in 1915 and volunteered in the French military
( the U.S. was neutral at that time) Eventually, McConnell and 6 others
including Kiffin Rockwell, another "Tar Heel" from Ashville, formed the
elite Lafayette Escadrille, a world renown group of the first fighter
pilots. McConnell was the last of the group shot down before the U.S.
entered the war in April 1917. He was shot down and killed while chasing a
German plane. Reports are that 2 planes shot him down on MARCH 19th 1917, 94
years prior to this dedication.
I can be contacted at this email, or 910-695-5216.
Thanks for passing this on,
Roland Gilliam

FYI - Even though this is an RV fly-in, other planes are welcome. Even
those backward flying plastic things. ;)
