Cruise is 95-100 mph 2. 500 feet take off water 3. Empty weight depends on your XL. Add 100 lbs for floats. 4. I prefer Rotax. Not quite as fast, but better performance due to more trust at low speeds, and less weight, and less fuel consumption. 5. 914 is too much money, and the performance will be seen at altitude. And a lot more installation trouble. 6. No other suggestion for engines now. The 912 ULS is my choice due to good power and light weight. Reduction drive means good thrust for acceleration. A couple of weeks back there was a thread on Zenith CH701 float performance #''s. At that time Chip Erwin mentioned the Zodiac XL float option as being faster than the CH701. I went back and reviewed that thread and I couldn't find any actual performance data from Chip. The recent Custom Planes article was somewhat lacking in specifics...mentioning an 85 kt. cruise speed and 600-700 fpm climb. Chip...could you point me to a link that discusses the actual performance of the XL on floats? Otherwise...could you comment on the following: 1. Realistic airspeed in cruise configuration for XL on floats. 2. Realistic water take-off distance, assuming no wind and a non-glassy surface. 3. Empty weight with floats? Actual useful load with the 912S & 1150 amphib floats. 4. Your perceptions of the Jabiru 3300 vs. the Rotax 912S in the XL on floats. 5. Do you think the Rotax 914 would offer a significant benefit over the 912S on floats...in terms of shorter take-off runs and better climb rate at sea level? Or would it be not worth the extra expense and trouble? 5. Are you aware of any true 125 hp power options for XL on floats? (The Lyc O-235 and Cont O-200 would probably be too heavy for my liking...and the Cont IO-240B is clearly too heavy). Thank's. Dan ---
