Malcom,
Find yourself a set of Avid fibreglass floats. They can be found pretty
easily for less than you could build a set of any kind of float. And float
building can be a VERY BIG job (just ask someone that has done it). Just
saw a set sell for $1500 with rigging that would bolt right up to your
airplane. They are great floats too. They are the floats shown on my Avid
in the video on the Kitfox Lazair site (

) Downside of the floats? Not overly strong (but not bad), and will
handle an airplane properly no more than 700 pounds empty weight. A 500
lb'ish E.W. airplane (on wheels) would be perfect for these floats. The
heaviest I've flown on these was a 650 pound Mark IV Avid. But they worked
fine, just sat lower in the water. But never a problem.
Another really good float is the Aerocet straight float. But they are
getting hard to find.
Just my suggestion.

There is a set of PuddleJumper straight floats in the hanger with my
Challenger. They are for sale through the airport owner (Don Zank
715-568-2244) The airport is in Bloomer WI. I don't have the model #
or what he is asking for them...give him a call; I heard they are cheap.

Shorty, it was third grade math that included addition and subtraction
that allowed me to make that statement.
Go ahead and subtract the 180 pounds or whatever your amphib float
setups weigh from your gross and then "SURPRIZE" me with your answer.
Maybe you will "surprize" us with being fully flyable and safe over
factory spec gross weight ? ?

Zenith allows you to up the gross weight by the difference between floats and wheels,
(on the 701 at least) the justify this by saying that the floats carry
their own weight aerodynamically, Chris confirmed this in a letter. John
