Pat;
If it helps any, I recently put urethane tape on my Kitfox amphib that runs
a fibreglass IVO prop. It is a little underfloated, so when plow taxiing in
a strong wind I took enough water through the prop to damage the fibreglass
tips. Actually delaminated the very tip of one of the three blades. But I
realized it was my own fault as I hadn't covered the very tips of the blade
leading edge with the tape completely. So when water hit the bare
fibreglass part of the tip, it tore it apart. I was pretty impressed to see
that wherever the tape was that it worked to keep erosion from happening.
So in my opinion, it works.
I realize you are dealing with a certified airplane, but I just used 3m
stoneguard material that is used on automobiles for protection in front of
the rear wheels. Available from most autobody supply houses. And a lot
less money than prop guard. Would be interesting to know how the thickness
of each product compares. Thicker the better I'm sure.
Fwiw - the military used urethane tape on the rotors of helicopter in the
desert. I guess everything else they tried got chewed up real bad by the
sand erosion. Probably a little thicker than the autobody stuff, but the
concepts the same.

Malcom,
Call John Knapp at 252-923-5145. He has built a set or two of those. I
think he could help you out.
