Malcom,
I think you might already know this, but you can check out
www.oshkoshseaplanebase.com for info, photos, and a forum. That site
was originally made for volunteers to use, as well as visiting seaplane
pilots, etc. Bottom line; lots of good stuff for those of us that enjoy
the seaplane base during AirVenture. Oh yeah, we also recently added a
complete list of all the volunteers!

Reversing propeller
A question to experienced floatplane pilots.
Is a reversing propeller useful on a floatplane. We are building a
Murphy Moose powered by the M14 radial engine and wonder if it is
worthwhile investing in a reversing prop.
Thanks
Rino

I ended up with a reversing prop when I re-engined a SeaBee I rebuilt.
It is VERY useful for docking. The most useful thing is the ability to
get very close to zero thrust right before you enter Beta for close
quarters. You can also impress the natives by backing up from the gas
pump!!.

I haven't used a reversing prop myself but the guys I have come in
contact
with that use them daily say they love 'em. Makes for very short
landings,
docking and mooring are much easier.
BTW most turbine engines have full beta props. I won't say all turbines
until I have seen all turbine setups... So the best I can do is say all
the
turbine setups I have seen have the full beta prop systems.

One of the reasons I've stayed away from flying boats is the docking
issue related to the tip floats. Just can't pull up to any old dock like
you can with floats especially in a wind. Is this maybe why reversing
props are more common on this type of aircraft?

I've got an excellent short tail S7 with or without floats for sale.
It's a 94 kit but has upgrades that make it closer to a 98. Anyone
interested?

You're probably correct, used a dock only a couple times, most of my
operations was out in the Gulf or Bay, or nudging up to a beach
somewhere. John
