- I guess Bill got in ahead of me but Ron has my heads also. Sounded like
the best thing to do even before first flight.
- Also ordered a spare mag pickup. I noticed a spot on the other side of
the drive was machined out and had a threaded hole for another pickup. I
figured this might be a nice start for a homemade digital tach so I'll try
that.
- Ordered a spare engine mount and requested a non powder-coated version
that I could have beefed up. Probably won't have it done before re-assembly
but I could swap that out at a later date.
- I called MSD and hoped to get some details about using or not using both
ignitions. The guy that answered at tech help didn't know but asked someone
and said "sure, no problem". I asked twice more, making it clear that they
would both be running full time thru the selector and he said that's the way
they show it on a drawing. It wasn't a confidence-inspiring answer, more of
a "ya, ya", but that's it for now. Does anyone know where I could get a
schematic of an electronic ignition?
- any preferences on inviting other people to this list? I guess like all
of Matt's lists, it's basically open to anyone that signs up so more people
are likely to find it anyway. But, I was thinking specifically of letting
Mykal know and Ron at Ram. It's nice to have a small list with only owners
too. Thoughts? I'll try to call "Tom from Idaho" too. He was just in
Kitplanes for a second time, a very high time Stratus pilot with a Rans S-7
(over 1000 hours).
- I'm pretty busy because I'm having fun finishing up details before
inspection so I've been going from work to the hangar and kinda living there
(even setup an old fridge there). But, I'd like to start a list of known
problems/concerns/configurations and try to keep a document posted on this
list. So far I would list;
- valve guides (new Stratus guides have clips)
- engine mount (top right needs larger gusset)
- backup ignition bracket (newer version is .175")
- alternator bracket (newer version is 3/16")
- run both ignitions thru MSD?
Not much really, could add more stuff - how to adjust belt (measure play
at tip, setup jig to get 1/8" deflection at 20lbs? - I'm very new, but it
seems like 1/4" play at the end of my 68" prop is about right). Props used?
Probably all Warp Drive 3-blade 70" square tip. I might be the only one
with a fixed-pitch 2-blade and I'm sure it's not as smooth. Accessories?
Fuel system used, cooling system, electrical system? Just some thoughts for
future discussions and info to gather.
Thanks,
Gary

Good idea, Gary, including people like "Tom" who are high-time Stratus users,
even if they fly other type aircraft. How about the guy who designed the
"Airdale/Pursang" planes. I believe it's John Larson who writes a column in
Kitplanes. I think he used a Stratus EA-81 in his original Pursang.

On another note, I will be changing my reduction drive belt at thge 300

(which

May also want to note the poor quality foam air filters that are supplied.
Mine failed (tore) before the first flight, even if it hadn't the K&N is the
only way to go in my opinion.

I have some info I could send you on this belt tension issue. My first plane
was a Challenger with a Rotax 503 belt drive very similar to the Stratus
setup. Anyway the UL guys discuss this topic a lot. Let me know if your
interested & I'll sent it to you (if I can still find it).
