Hi,
I have followed a bunch of your e-mails prior to this list being formed and was
waiting for the list to add my comments.
I have about 100 hours on my Stratus engine. Until this year I have had no problems,
it has run excellently.
I recently had the engine run too hot and have had a snowball effect of problems
since, although most if not all have been self inflicted.
According to my gauges, the engine never exceeded the max. specified in the manual,
but the sensor on the head was melted. This happened a couple times and I
did notice a small amount of coolant leakage out of the head gasket. I pulled
the heads and took them to a shop where they were plained due to slight warpage.
They also touched up the valves etc..The shop indicated the valve springs
were not all the same size, so they replaced the ones that were not correct. Valve
guides were all in place and did not show any signs of movement.
The engine seemed to run better once the heads were reinstalled, but I did not
get the plane up for a flight.
I have been noticing moisture around one of the case bolts and decided to loosen
it, add sealant and reinstall. BIG mistake. I must have been brain dead. When
I tightened it back up, it would not take any torque, the threads were stripped.
The only way to repair it was to take the engine apart to fix the threads.
Upon splitting the case, I found the main bearing had some scratches from debris
and the centre one had two significant chips (gouges). Since I had the engine
this much apart, and had some problems removing one of the piston pins, I
decided it was a good idea to remove the pistons as well and check everything
out. The last piston was a problem removing and I damaged the cylinder (part
of the cylinder insert separated from the case). So, now I had to get a new case
(used of course), get it borred, cleaned etc.
Now I have all the parts ready to go for reassembly including new rings, all bearings,
case etc. Will start sometime in the next few weeks. Was quite a downer
for a while, but at least now I know the engine really well and will effectively
have a new engine.
So now you know me and my story.
A couple of comments based on postings I have seen so far.
-Dual Ignition: My engine was purchased in 1997 from Reiner. I have no documentation
to say this but I am sure he said to run both ignitions all the time.
I have done so for the full 100 hours with no ignition problems.
-Have had no problems with the ignition bracket, alt. bracket or engine mount,
but will check all as I reassemble things.
-Valve guides didn't seem to be a problem, but the heads have now been re-done
-I have dealt with both Reiner and Mykal on numerous occasions and have always
had quick and good responses from them. They have helped a lot.
Has anyone rebuilt one of these yet? I am sure I will have a few questions on reassembly.
I think this list is a great idea.

They also list an 880-8M-60T and 880-8M-60W. Anyone know what the "T"
or "W" indicate?
Always curious.

Subject: | Hard wire throttle linkage |

Hi guys,
I just finished removing the throttle cables and left cable sleeve and replaced
it with a linkage that makes it between the throttle shaft links and converts
the connection from the firewall to a single-sleeved .065 hard cable control.
This needs no springs and is very smooth. Much more like the C-150
throttle. Pictures on my Subaru page and the methods are described
within the journal segment 6. I didn't much like the spring/cable type
throttle, so this was the result. Hope it doesn't offend anyone's
mechanical sensitivities. Even so, please advise.
thanks,
