This is a big surprise that they are made out of mild steel. I'm not a mechanical engineer but that doesn't sound right. I'll ask him about that. The softer stuff will fail more slowly, crack and sag long before failure. For a few years, I designed special lifting bails, typically using softer stuff so it could be inspected for deformation and cracking before it would fail on someone. If he used harder steels, I'd expect the mount to weigh at least as much.
