My engine came packed very tightly in Korean newspaper
and I wondered if this was imported as rebuild or new. I doubt that the
block for the
engine is even available as new. It'd be interesting to know how these
differ from what
the previous Stratus owner used to provide.

Hi Larry,
As I understand it these blocks haven't been available new since 1983 in the
EA-81, which was replaced by the EA-82, an overhead cam engine with a little
more power. Guys have been scrambling for the blocks for a number of years in
the states. These engines are likely to be high mileage when coming to the shop
for aircraft use. My friend Joe put one on his gyro with 78,000 miles on it
without doing a thing to the engine and has flown it wide open with a reduction
drive since 1994. Keeps on tickin. These engines could be picked up in a salvage
yard from $100 to three hundred dollars.
At the same time, import engines have been available used from Japan for around
$500. Strict Emission laws required them to exceed no more than 35 or 40,000
miles before they had to be scrapped. So this provided a source of low mileage
imported engines. That has been going on for years. I'm not sure how available
these are now.
I think your question has something to do with this. My Stratus engine was
obviously a high time engine from the states, luck of the draw. But Reiner guaranteed
it to be "perfect". HA! The lower mileage imports do not arrive rebuilt,
but may be used without having to redo guides, thus the integrity of the original
engine is there for these. But I don't know where Mikel is getting his.
I replaced my Stratus with an EA-81 from a salvage yard. We rebuilt it but
left the valve guides. It has given me no trouble yet and runs smooth as silk.

Dear Listers,
Matronics is now utilizing a SPAM filter appliance to filter out the
excessive amounts of inappropriate email that bombards the Email List
Forums each day. The filter is reporting that over 66% of the email
messages sent to Matronics email destinations are of SPAM content and
reviewing the logfiles, it would appear to be true. That is indeed great!
While the Lists are enjoying the breath of fresh air afforded by the new
appliance, I am suspecting that a few legitimate email List posts are being
blocked as too, although I can't confirm this. It is difficult to churn
through the logfiles looking though thousands of blocked email messages
trying to determine if any legitimate List posts were blocked.
If you suspect that your posts are accidently being blocked by the SPAM
filter appliance, I have created a new Trouble Report web page that will
allow you to report your problems directly to me without having to use
email. If the SPAM filter is blocking your email address for some reason,
then its likely that I wouldn't be able to receive your direct email
regarding difficulty in posting. The web form bypasses the incoming email
and directs your message directly to me.
Please include as much information as possible regarding the problems you
are having including any bounced email or email error messages that you may
have received back in regard to your posts to the lists. The more
information I have about the email you are sending and what the errors you
are receiving, the better chance I'll have in hunting down the problem.
