Hello, List: The information I received in talking with the representatives from Fuji Heavy Industries (Subaru's parent co.) at my former employer indicates that you're correct, the EA-81 hasn't been used in any automotive application since 1983. Since that time, however, there have been a few applications of the engine (or a dirrivative using the same block) as a utility engine to power generators, pumps, and other such items requiring moderate power, but high reliability. I don't know how long those uses continued, but suspect they are long gone. This does show the strength, reliability, and versatility of this basic engine.
