Sadly Kelly although you have replaced your ignition you have not improved
the design. If you put the same soob electrical parts in the distributor you
still have a notoriously feeble system.
The failure scenario you describe is the same that has happened to several
others (including me) and the cost of the dizzy electronics runs about $300.
My guess is you bought a second hand dizzy?
What is a much more robust system is to wire the pick up coil to a GM 4 pin
ignitor module. These can be had for $25 or NAPA make the TP 45 unit which
is termed "heavy duty". I have purposly shorted out the coil connections
from this chip and it still runs just fine afterwards, whereas as you say a
low resistance in the coil will fry the standard Soob components.
If your coil holds up you will be fine but you could very easily be in the
same place in another 60 hours.
Not to rub it in but you could have had a much better system for about $100
and then had your heads rebuilt.
To make you feel better...I had Stratus rebuild my heads ($500) and then
sent them to Ron to have them re done....(another $500)...Mind you I'm glad
I did!

Stratus List,
Finally got my 60 hour Stratus powered 601 HD back in the air once again
this week. If you remember about a month ago I had an engine out while I was
cursing 1,000 ft agl, and after switching to the back up ignition I was able
to keep it out of the corn & make it home strip safely.
Well here is a run down on what failed on my engine (ignition) in the order
I believe the failure(s) occurred.
1. Primary coil failed (resistance down to .2 ohms) - replaced. 2. The hot
coil over heated the ignition wire running from #1 coil to the distributor -
replaced all wires, splitter to coils & to distributor. 3. The ICM in the
distributor overheated & failed - replaced distributor, cap, & rotor.
Cost to get plane flying again - just under $500! (There goes my head rework
by RAM I had been saving for). I hope this isn't a bill I have to encounter
every 60 hours!
Additional notes:
1. My new distributors air gap was set at zero when delivered. Stratus had
my original gap set at .016, I set mine to .012 (seems to be fine there). 2.
I set my ignition timing to 31 degrees at 4,000 RPM. This seems to be about
3 deg more advanced than my original dist.just looking at it's location.
To reduce the chance of over heating my seemingly sensitive ignition system
again I made a few modifications.
1. Added exhaust wrap to pipes, & muffler.
2. Added two NACA vents to the top of my cowl (approx over the carbs).
One last additional note..... as my plane was down anyway for repairs I did
my annual inspection (was due this month anyway).
I found the ABS plastic elbow on the passenger side carb had swollen by the
gas and was covering the small orifice at the air intake. I removed the
elbow to try to file the bulge down but found the edge of the plastic elbow
to be the texture of old bubble gum. I tossed the thing away & just mounted
that air filter directly to the carb and eliminating the elbow .... seems to
work fine that way. Other elbow is still ok.
Plane seems to fly normally once again. Temps ran nice and cool (for my
plane anyway) water held at 195, & oil was 220, but OAT is cooler now so
it's hard to say if my mod's did any good.
Lastly I just wanted to thank all you Stratus guys that gave me advice and
direction sorting out my ignition problem! It's nice to be fly'n again!

Frank,
I appreciate what you've been through here and what you suggest is really
good advice.
I'm going to do ignition and heads sometime this winter.
Suppose Ron offers quantity discount on rebuilding heads?
Finally retired, got the time.

Good for you Larry,
I don't know about quantity discounts, I don't think he has been seeing that
much volume. I hope he gets the volume because he does very good work and
finally has the solution we should have had three years ago.
After my house remodel project I'm going to start on an RV 7....I honestly
don't think I will be using anything but a Lycoming for that one...

Yup I tried this route. But sadly to say I couldn't get my plane to start
with this setup. I ended up discussing this installation with Michel
Therrien as he has attempted this also. He had the same results that I had
..... the plane just would not start. Seems the starter does not turn the
engine over fast enough to allow the engine to start with this TP 45 unit.
He did say he had success starting the engine by tweaking with the airgap
setting & after starting it would then continue running OK. But it wouldn't
always start with consistency. I guess he gave up on it also. Possibly
someone with more knowledge in this field could figure it out, but I have a
hard enough time just trying to turn on a light switch.

True ... and I'm also worried about that but at this point I really don't
see a very good option on the market to just bolt on. Seems it would take
lots of time & effort by an experienced person to put together a better
mousetrap. And I know I'm not the guy to do it. So as I seen it my only
option was to try it one more time. Yes there have been some ignition
failures, but like the valve guide issue lots of planes are still going
strong with these stock ign's.
Thanks again for your help diagnosing my ign problem for me, just wish I had
your talent to fix the problem correctly.
