      Hil list,
I recieved my heads from RAM with the new valve guides, springs and valves this
morning and also returned were the old guides, springs, valves etc in zip-lock
      bags.

Being a little slow on the uptake, I was looking over the old valve guides and
realized that 4 of the 8 old guides
were heavily knurled for a tight fit. This is something I doubt that Stratus would
have exercised any control over in
      reciept of his rebuilt engines.

These guides might have held for the long haul, but it gives me considerable comfort
to know the new ones from RAM won't slide out in my 601.

Ram really does nice work. Certainly worth the buck.
Thanks Frank and Bill for the heads up (no pun intended).

      Larry,
Please clear something up for me. Are the guides knurled internally or
externally? I've only heard of internally.

There is much debate but MY OWN OPINION is that knurled guides have no place
on an aircraft engine...Gee I would'nt even do it on a car!

Yeah, it's somehing I haven't seen done in years, what do guides cost, $3-5?
And when I had seen it done, it was to set clearance and hold some extra oil
in the guide, not on the outside. I just unloaded my half finished project
and opened up the Stratus box. First thing is "off with its heads". Followed
by gusseting the engine mount, though the kit came with two, one of which is
supposed to be new and improved, from Zenith, not Stratus. Anybody know
      anything about those?

Some of the guides are ribbed externally and tapered slightly for ease of
      insertion
I'd guess. Didn't know that knurling could be an internal operation.
      Always thought
it was something done on a lathe. The ribs are not even or consistent in
      width or depth
either. A little different from the cross hatch diamond pattern one would
      have expected
      to see.
