I got all my old parts back in a bag too and there were no knurled guides.
Mine was delivered Aug 2000, how about yours?
Don't forget to re-torque all bolts after at least the first run of the
engine. I was surprised to find a few head bolts that loosened up after
putting the new heads on and running it just once. One of the intake bolts
needed re-tightening too.

Hi list,
I thought it worth while to mention that the info on the sequence of
cylinder head torquing in the Haynes Subaru engine overhaul
manual is different than what is needed to get it done
with conventional tools. It's torquing sequence puts the
17mm rocker bolts into the mix, but requires special wrenches
to clear the rocker tube on the center and left bolts.
Don Bochard's Subaru tapes describe a process which puts
the valve rocker bolts in after the torque process on
the heads is completed.
The four nuts on washers top row sequence numbers are #4, #6, #5, #3
The three lower nuts on washers are #1, #7 and #2 as you look at them.
These are torqued progressively in three stages
of 22 lbs, 43lbs and 47 lbs.
Then the pushrods and rockers are attached and the two
rocker bolts are added and tightened in a repeat of the
same torque progression.
My EA-81 doesn't have two more bolts at the bottom as some do.
