      Dear Listers,

A few Listers have asked me recently, "What's my Contribution used for?",
and that's a valid question. Here are just a few examples of what your
direct List support enables... It provides for the expensive,
business-class, high-speed Internet connection used on the List, insuring
maximum performance and minimal contention when accessing List
services. It pays for the regular system hardware and software upgrades
enabling the highest performance possible for services such as the Archive
Search Engine and List Browser. It pays for 15+ years worth of on line
archive data available for instant random access. And, it offsets the many
hours spent writing, developing, and maintaining the custom applications
that power this List Service such as the List Browse, Search Engine, and
      Photoshare.

But most importantly, your List Contribution enables a forum where you and
your peers can communicate freely in an environment that is free from
moderation, censorship, advertising, commercialism, SPAM, and computer
viruses. How many places on the Internet can you make all those statements
about these days? I will venture to say - next to none...

It is YOUR CONTRIBUTION that directly enables these many desirable aspects
of this most valuable List service. Please support it today with your List
Contribution. Its the best investment you can make in your Sport - BAR NONE!

      Thanks Larry,
I was looking for one of those but gave up and bought plastic radiator
hose couplers from NAPA and got a bunch of assorted short elbows from them
too. It all worked out but it looks like my cooling system might need to be
a little better so I might be reworking parts of it.

It's still early but after a few more flights it looks like when I cruise
at 4800 rpm oil is about 235 and water is near 220. Seems too high. When I
pull back to 4500 things drop down to 220 oil and 210 water. That's
certainly better but not quite there yet, nevermind that the weather is cool
      right now.

I'm climbing at about 5000 rpm. Any comments on any of these numbers? I
have more of a cruise prop so the 5000 is actually better than expected.
I'm guessing most people cruise at 4600-4800 is that right? Does anyone go
for full power at 5400 rpm?

I was thinking of cutting in a NACA scoop right under the oil pan to get
some air over it. I'm not ready to add more radiator or an oil cooler yet.
It seems like some tweaks should do it rather than major redesign. I never
painted my cowling becasue I knew I wasn't done till I was done, so at least
I won't mind if I have to change the cowling. Can't wait to finish paint
and graphics, it's ready to travel (after about 30 more hours of test).

      Gary

      Gary,

I just flew my HDS - Stratus yesterday for the first time after replacing
the two prop shaft bearings, the HTD belt and the front and rear engine oil
seals as well as doing my annual.

Mine climbs at about 4800 rpm. Full power cruise gives 5200 rpm, I usually
cruise at 4800 rpm. My engine temps yesterday were 185 engine, 210 oil.
This is typical for me in this rather cool weather. During the summer, I
usually see 190-195 engine 220 oil.

The HDS does have an air intake cut in the cowl right in front of the oil
pan. I would say it's about 4 or 5 inches square.

The other thing that helped me was I made sure that there were no leaks on
the sides and rear of the radiator so that all the air entering had to go
      through the radiator.

      Regards,
      Bill
