Hi list,
Seems very quiet lately, probably because of the holidays
but I recieved a book that should be a must read for the
Subaru user. It's Alternative Engines Volume 2 by Mick Myal and
it was ordered thru the Builders Bookstore. It covers a lot
of Subaru cooling problems and solutions that run the total gamut.
It's very well illustrated and examines a multitude of homebuilt
aircraft as well as historical evolved wartime liquid cooled designs.
Of the automotive engines covered, a good many of the homebuilts
are Subaru. Nearly every approach discussed on the Matronics
site are illustrated. In wing radiators and the airflow results are shown
for a mulitude of variations from earliest to the latest modern applications.
Several VW Rabbit radiator installations are examined, discussed
and well illustrated for approaches that work best to improve cooling issues.
This book covers redrives, mounts and systems in detail. For $43.00, I think
it's a bargan and a very interesting read.
Happy Holidays,
Larry McFarland at www.macsmachine.com

Larry,
Thanks for passing along this info, sounds like good reading. Hard to
believe I'm worrying about over heating problems when I flew today with
2/3's of my VW radiator COVERED (OAT was 28 degrees).
Yes postings to this list has gone silent the past few weeks so here's
another question for the Stratus flyers.
With winter bearing down on us (at least here in northern Illinois) have any
of you guys tried using automotive gas line de-icer during the winter
months? I ran all last winter without it, but I'm just wondering if anyone
has found this helpful in our set-ups???
Happy Holidays to all,
Kelly Meiste

PS. Larry, if you get "cabin syndrome" building this winter please come and
visit SQI .... a few laps around the pattern here in my HD will do wonders
to chase away the winter blues!

Kelly,
Good to hear you are out there and still flying.
I have thought about using gas line de-icer but to date have not. This is
my third winter flying without a problem. One reason I have not used it is
that I have only seen water in my fuel samples once and that was after I
had my wing tank re welded and the welder had used water to wash the inside
of the tank. When I was renting Cessna 150's and 172's I used to see water
in the fuel samples virtually every time I flew?? Leaky gas caps perhaps??
I'm sure it certainly can't hurt to use the de-icer.
On my annual (in November) I did a good amount of engine work on my
Stratus. New front and rear oil seals, new HTD belt and new prop shaft
bearings. I've been meaning to put together some photos and a blurb on how
all that was done for you Stratus guys. It was a bit of a challenge to do.
I've been very busy at work but I will put this together soon and probably
post it on my web site.
