--> Stratus-List message posted by: FlyinK@Efortress.com I'm thinking of cutting the Stratus exhaust right after the elbows and extending the muffler/tailpipe back about 9-12". Any idea if this would affect performance? I still need to rework my cooling system. It's ok flying in the winter but oil temp still lead water temps and it gets too high. I'd like to remove my nosegear and move the exhaust and tuck a radiator underneath behind the oil pan. I just tried to make a separate little duct under the oil pan but it didn't seem to do much. Temps from yesterday when it was about 45 degrees F outside; cruise 4000 rpm oil-220 wat-190 4800 rpm oil-240 wat-195 after 1000' climbs 5200 rpm oil-255 wat-210 Thanks for any info, Gary

Temps from yesterday when it was about 45 degrees F outside; Hi Gary I have a square hole in from of the bottom cowl that allows air to blast into and around the oil pan, keeping the oil quite cool. In the winter time, the oil temps never reach 180 and the water temps stay at about 195 (rpm = 4000). I added two aluminum strips, one of each side of the hole on the cowling, to restrict the air flow so the oil temps would not stay too low (I remove the strips in the summer time). I fabricated a piece of .016 sheet so it covers the muffler (there's a very slight air gap between the sheet and the muffler) and deflect the air from inside the engine compartment to the right side of the air exhaust from the bottom of the cowling (as viewed from the front of the plane) and allow cool outside air to enter the radiator from the left side of the bottom cowl. The idea is to reduce the amount of heated air from the engine compartment going past the hot muffler and into the radiator. This scheme has really helped with cooling in the summer time, although I would still like to add a heater core to give me heat in the cabin in the winter and to deflect more heat from the engine in the summer. My Stratus really performs well in the wintertime. Engine still starts right up even in cold days. Hope this helps... Dick (174 hours)
