Wow Gary. Only the weight of some AN washers on the prop bolts. That close to
the center of rotation I wouldn't expect that much effect. How many washers
did you add?
P.S. - I just joined this list. Should have joined a long time ago since I've
been running a Stratu since 1998. I'm also one of the early ones to have some
of the known problems.

we grinded down some
AN washers until they were the right weight and put them on two prop bolts
(the degrees mark for the weights was between two prop bolts so he split the
weight between the two). we ran it again and got .04. he said he never saw
it go that low with one try and didn't think he could do much better so he
said to try it. it was night and day,

Hi list,
I finally completed the custom air intake
that has been in focus since the 12th of this month.
After all the former discussion on the Matronics page,
I decided to replace the former "scoop air intake" with a design
that takes air separate from the belly and proportioned to
increase the intake air only slightly as it passes the mouth
and enters the radiator. This is because the aircraft
is taking air at a much slower speed than WWII craft, but
perhaps pulling the air from a lower position than the bare radiator
will also help. The form, mold and assembly was a complex
sort of construct, but hopefully will answer some of the
questions that were raised on behalf of cooling.
It's also a nice looking piece which says form and function
might be well served by what was accomplished.
If you're interested, I've added pictures on the Subaru engine
page on my site at www.macsmachine.com.
Best regards to all,
Larry McFarland 601HDS (nearly complete)

Larry,
I'm sure you're sick of hearing this, but man do you do nice work. That
plane looks perfect. Please let us know how it works, I'm hoping to do
something like that soon.
I just got a new used radiator in the mail today, it's 21" X 5" X 3"
thick. It may be too thick but I'm going to try it. My little oil pan duct
didn't seem to help the cooling much so I'll try a prototype setup with this
radiator and if it works good then I'm hoping Ron at RAM can get a 16" X 6"
X 2" and I'll modify the cowling for good. They will both be perpendicular
under the plane but this first attempt will be under the fuselage right
behind the cowling and the other one will go right where the muffler is and
I'll reweld the muffler to go further back. The front scoop will have air
going over the oil pan.
What size radiators do the 601's use? Is there airflow over the oil pan?
Gary
