Gary,
I'm using a standard cowl, Stratus exhaust and standard ZAC radiator mounted
38" aft.
The muffler has a heat-muff around it and the exhaust pipes have been
wrapped with
the high-temp belting used by the racing guys. In the last runups, I
noticed that
the exhaust pipes hadn't got so hot that you couldn't still touch the
belting and the
muffler doesn't radiate enough heat to warrant a second heat shield for the
fuel system on the
firewall. I may cover those anyway because it hasn't reached max and flown
yet.
These things seem to be very effective in containing the heat and directing
most of it away from the oil pan and radiator etc. They're probably a lot
less work than rewelding
exhaust pipe. If you've not tried them they seem really worth the effort.
I've got pictures of these on my site at the Subaru Engine page if you're
curious.

The oil keeps creeping up and will
go to redline if I let it (260) but I usually shutdown by 250 or so
I think I am giving up on all
these "attempts" and will reweld the exhaust to get it out of the cowling,

Please do a periodic check of your exhaust pipes under the wrap. Experience
I've had with the wrap is that it takes the welds out, I suspect it is
concentrating too much heat. Does what it is supposed to (the good part),
but I'm just scared of what it's doing to the pipes below it. YMMV

I think I'd be looking annually. We've seen some Miata headers just
completely fall apart under the heat wrap, plus I tried it on a turbo
downpipe and it self destructed.

was that on stainless or mild steel exhaust? i've heard not to wrap mild
steel but that stainless was ok. i also ceramic coated mine before wrapping
and that is supposed to help.

Hi Guys,
If I recall correctly the stainless steel pipes are pretty much immune to
this problem. But just to be safe I only wrapped mine to within about a half
inch of the welds leaving them exposed. Only a half year on mine but no
problems to date.
