The muffler has a heat-muff around it and the exhaust pipes have been wrapped with the high-temp belting used by the racing guys. In the last runups, I noticed that the exhaust pipes hadn't got so hot that you couldn't still touch the belting and the muffler doesn't radiate enough heat to warrant a second heat shield for the fuel system on the firewall. I may cover those anyway because it hasn't reached max and flown yet. These things seem to be very effective in containing the heat and directing most of it away from the oil pan and radiator etc. They're probably a lot less work than rewelding exhaust pipe. If you've not tried them they seem really worth the effort. I've got pictures of these on my site at the Subaru Engine page if you're curious. Thanks guys for the input, it reduced my fear factor a bit. Experience I've had with the wrap is that it takes the welds out, I suspect it is concentrating too much heat. Does what it is supposed to (the good part), but I'm just scared of what it's doing to the pipes below it. Or would you include this to your annual inspection? We've seen some Miata headers just completely fall apart under the heat wrap, plus I tried it on a turbo downpipe and it self destructed. YMMV ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Hi Guys, If I recall correctly the stainless steel pipes are pretty much immune to this problem. But just to be safe I only wrapped mine to within about a half inch of the welds leaving them exposed. Only a half year on mine but no problems to date. Kelly 601 Stratus HD
