Bill,
How much were you burning before? I'm guessing this is a sudden jump? I'm
no engine guy, but I'd be worried. I have no idea why it would burn that
much but I'll ask around. Maybe ask on the airsoob list too. I just added
oil for the first time the other day and I was surprised to see the level
dropped because I haven't really seen it move during the 45 hours I have on
it now. I think I changed the oil around 20 hours. So, I added less than
1/2 qt in about 20 hours but it's hard to say. I messed around with my oil
temp sender and ended up draining/replacing some about 10 hours ago. I'll
have to check my records and start keeping track. My exhaust pipes are
really sooty too as is the belly of the plane.
Keep us posted,
Gary

Dick,
I found that too on both sides. I think either Kelly or Bill here (sorry,
forgot who) provided some insight. The theory is that the slanted intake
provides more fuel to the front cylinders and less to the rear because it
has a hard time making the sharper turn. At least that's my interpretation.
Ron at RAM said that's a problem with the Stratus intake, it has to be set
up rich so that the rear cylinders won't run too lean.

Hey Bill,
If this has been doing this from day one I would bet that your cylinders are
out of round.
Ron at Ram performance tells me that unless you bore the engine with the
deck plate bolted down, the cyliners will shift as you bolt up the heads.
Almost nobody bores engines this way. Not much you can do about it...I burn
oil too but not quite that much.
Frank

My compression is the same as it was when the engine was new. I perform a
differential and regular compression check.
Plugs all have a light tan color and never wet.
No oil leaks anywhere. I did have seeping last year at both front and rear
seals but I replaced both seals on my annual and there is now no leakage.
I do have soot inside the exhaust stack that readily comes off on my finger.
Bottom of fuselage gets a light coat of soot over time but I have always
noticed that since day one.
Don't mind putting oil in every 7 hours but just would like to know where it
is going.
Stratus now has 315.7 hours on it.
Any thoughts????

Possibly too rich and washing the cylinder walls?

For an engine to use oil only one of three things can be happening...
1) It leaks
2) Poor oil/air seperation and it loses oil thru the crankcase vent
tube....EA 81's do this a little but its barely noticable
3)getting between the valves stem and guide and burnt in the combustion
chamber
4) Its getting past the rings and burning in the combustion chamber.
5) Leaking head gasket that is sucking the oil into the combustion
chamber....Never heard of that happening on one of these motors.
Root causes for item 3 are possibly....
Broken/missing piston ring, hole in the piston, damaged bore/piston or
cylinder out of round
Frank
