--> Stratus-List message posted by: "Larry McFarland" <larrymc@qconline.com> Hi guys, This mornings Hist Channel, there was a piece on the 55 chevy engine and its early tendency to burn a quart of oil every 100 miles or less and owners weren't happy. Someone at GM suggested they put a little BonAmi thru the carbs and as result, the oil consumption dropped off to normal. Apparently the abrasive scuffed up the rings and walls enough to get them to re-seat and obtain a better seal. Don't know if this would help the Subaru that burns oil, but it might be worth a shot. --> Stratus-List message posted by: "Bill Morelli" <billvt@together.net> I have always had some oil consumption but for some unknown reason, I never really took the time to see how many hours it was taking to use 1 quart. When I flew to Sun and Fun last year I put 29 hours on the engine and used close to 4 quarsts of oil so that sounds about what I am using now. Since Sun N Fun, the engine has another 100 hours on it so the oil consumption seems about the same now. When using the differential pressure tester you can listen at different areas to hear leaking. My differnetial leak test shows about a 12% or so leak and all four cyclinders are close to each other. Listening at the carbs, oil filer and exhaust stack using a hollow tube the most leak is coming from the oil filler which to me means the piston rings. I don't hear much at the exhaust stack or through the carbs. The information with the difrential tester indiacates that 12% is a low leakage. I also have only done these compression tests cold so there may be some improvement in the readings if I did it with the engine warm. I ran this all by Ron at Ram performance a while back and he had me check for breather blowby (I did not realy find any). He asked if the engine is smoking (don't know, since I'm alwyas in it). I might get the wife to keep a close look while I taxi out and take off to see if she sees any smoke. Ron also asked if the oil was thinning indicating gas in the oil but at oil change time, the oil has seemed normal (I use 20w-50). Ron also said that his engines leave the shop with zero % leak!!! Maybe this thing has oval pistons as Frank H has suggested and it has always pushed some oil??? I'm not sure what else to do about it except put a quart in every 7 hours. I have not run any of this past Mykal as I suspect he will not be much help. I'm guessing this is a sudden jump
