Stratus-List Usage Guidelines
******************************************************************************
The following details the official Usage Guidelines for the Stratus-List.
You are encouraged to read it carefully, and to abide by the rules therein.
Failure to use the Stratus-List in the manner described below may result
in the removal of the subscribers from the List.
Stratus-List Policy Statement
The purpose of the Stratus-List is to provide a forum of discussion for
things related to this particular discussion group. The List's goals
are to serve as an information resource to its members; to deliver
high-quality content; to provide moral support; to foster camaraderie
among its members; and to support safe operation. Reaching these goals
requires the participation and cooperation of each and every member of
the List. To this end, the following guidelines have been established:
- Please keep all posts related to the List at some level. Do not submit
posts concerning computer viruses, urban legends, random humor, long
lost buddies' phone numbers, etc. etc.
- THINK carefully before you write. Ask yourself if your post will be
relevant to everyone. If you have to wonder about that, DON'T send it.
- Remember that your post will be included for posterity in an archive
that is growing in size at an extraordinary rate. Try to be concise and
terse in your posts. Avoid overly wordy and lengthy posts and
responses.
- Keep your signature brief. Please include your name, email address,
aircraft type/tail number, and geographic location. A short line
about where you are in the building process is also nice. Avoid
bulky signatures with character graphics; they consume unnecessary
space in the archive.
- DON'T post requests to the List for information when that info is
easily obtainable from other widely available sources. Consult the
web page or FAQ first.
- If you want to respond to a post, DO keep the "Subject:" line of
your response the same as that of the original post. This makes it
easy to find threads in the archive.
- When responding, NEVER quote the *entire* original post in your
response. DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the
reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that
quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive
can not be overstated!
- When the poster asks you to respond to him/her personally, DO NOT
then go ahead and reply to the List. Be aware that clicking the
"reply" button on your mail package does not necessarily send your
response to the original poster. You might have to actively address
your response with the original poster's email address.
- DO NOT use the List to respond to a post unless you have something
to add that is relevant and has a broad appeal. "Way to go!", "I
agree", and "Congratulations" are all responses that are better sent
to the original poster directly, rather than to the List at large.
- When responding to others' posts, avoid the feeling that you need to
comment on every last point in their posts, unless you can truly
contribute something valuable.
- Feel free to disagree with other viewpoints, BUT keep your tone
polite and respectful. Don't make snide comments, personally attack
other listers, or take the moral high ground on an obviously
controversial issue. This will only cause a pointless debate that
will hurt feelings, waste bandwidth and resolve nothing.

I just put dual cht/egt guages in my Avid MK IV EA81. It's a float plane normally,
but I'm going back to wheels to attend a fly-in, about 550 miles away. I
will repitch my warp prop to 12.5 degrees and was curious what rpm most of you
cruise at. I usually use between 4000-4200? Also what are normal and maximum
CHT/EGT limits for the Stratus engine.
thanks
John

Right now I'm looking at prop options because 4000 rpm gets me only 70 knots
and 5000 rpm is 105 knots. So, I cruise at 4800-5000 but that seems high so
I need some sort of adjustable.
The Stratus manual says 230 degrees F max for CHT and 260 degrees is
considered overheated. Mine is 210-220 right now.
I still don't have EGT's setup but will install them soon.
If it's a 3-blade 70" square tip I heard 14 degrees gets best of climb and
cruise for the Stratus but I don't have one so that's third hand info. You
won't get 5000 static but it's still supposed to be better overall. My
fixed pitch was supposed to be a cruise prop but I get 5000 static and can
get 5400 WOT so I spose it's more of a climb prop.

All was well and starting on command until yesterday.
In preparation to do run ups with the prop, the Stratus starter
decided to quit. I found the 7.5 amp fuse protecting the ignition start blown
on the battery bus. On further inspection, the #4 cable from the battery
was loose under the starter stud/nut, probably hadn't been tightened since the
engine
was reinstalled. Replacing the fuse after tightening the contacts didn't seem
to
solve the problem. Thought perhaps the low voltage caused feed back in the
starter relay and fouled something. The starter did operate on a jigged cable
setup
with my Saturn's battery, so one might conclude that the relay is shorting to ground
when bolted on the plane. Anyone have experience with this kind of problem?
All else seems to check out on the voltmeter, but don't know just where to go
from here.

John,
My prop pitch is 15 degrees on my Stratus EA-81. Full throttle is about
5200 rpm. I usually cruise at 4400 rpm which gives me a fuel burn of around
3.5 to 4.0 gph. I sometimes cruise at 4800 giving me a fuel burn of 5.0 to
5.5 gph. - With the price of autogas lately, I've been sticking pretty much
to the 4400 rpm cruise to save fuel.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
John,
My with my Stratus powered 601 HD 3 blade wrap drive pitched at 12.5 deg I
cruise at 90 mph @ 4,000 rpm.
I now have re-pitched my prop to 15.5 and cruise at 100 mph @ 4,000 rpm.
As Bill has stated this really helps fuel burn as anything over the 3,800
rpm is past your max engine torque anyway and your really giving up a lot of
fuel for a little speed. I generally stay 3,800 to 4,000 rpm and squeeze 3.5
GPH out of it (I'm flying for fun not to get from point A to point B fast).
