When I replaced mine I had a machinist friend take a look at the spacer..My
thought was I could have him machine the OD of the spacer down and then make
a steel ring a few thou smaller and shrink fit it to the outside of the
spacer.
The problem is that a soft steel ring will apparently wear just as fast as
the anodized spacer...So now we need a hardend ring...Too complicated for a
"six pack" favour.
So in theory a soft steel spacer will wear quickly too unless you have it
hardened...It will be heavy too.

What I believe you have is the rear oil seal (behind the flywheel) leaking.
It is pressed into the reduction drive unit and is not the standard Subaru
oil seal.
I replaced mine. I did not have a puddle but did have oil on the inside of
the cowl in line with the flywheel as you describe. I could also see oil on
the aluminum reduction drive housing looking through those large holes in
the flywheel.
If you think you have a leaky seal, let me know and I can send you some
photos on the replacement and part number for the seal (which I purchased
locally). I think the seal was about $21.00 -
One problem with the design that causes this leak is that behind the
flywheel is a spacer that fits inside the seal and actually makes the oil
seal. This spacer was made from black anodized aluminum. The sharp rubber
edge of the seal over time wears a groove in that aluminum spacer. So to
make the new seal last as long as the first, I did not press the new seal in
quite as far as the original. This causes that sharp rubber edge of the new
seal to ride on a different location of the aluminum spacer thus avoiding
the grove that was made by the old seal. I think I have photos of this grove
damage as well.
The proper fix for this would be to have a steel spacer made by a machine
shop to replace the aluminum one. I may do that when this new seal starts
leaking.
The seal on the other end of the engine (front seal) does not have this
problem since the steel pulley is what rides on that seal and does not get
grooved over time. That front seal is a standard Subaru part.

Bill

Bill - thank you very much for this information. What you described is
exactly my problem. It just happened all of a sudden within the last 2 hours of
flying, although I did have some small oily deposits behind the flywheel but no
spraying of oil until now.
Yes, please send photos of the replacement seal and the part number. I
assume I can buy the seal from an auto parts store???
It sounds to me that I will have to remove the reduction unit in order to
make the repair. Oh wunnerful! Warm weather is here and I have some down time
facing me. Oh well, tha's life!
Thanks again, Bill. Am eagerly awaiting the part number and photos...

Dick,
You do not have to take the redrive off. Just the HTD belt and the flywheel.
I will put together a package of photos and some instructions. I need to go
through my logs and photo archives. Just give me a day or two.
I purchased my seal from a bearing supply house. The number for the seal is
NATIONAL 415021 so you can look for one.
Regards,
Bill
