Hi guys,
Well, there's little discussion of radiator postion
and its affect on cooling lately, so here's an update. I do have to
acknowlege those who have commented to this, because most of you were right.
My standard vw rabbit radiator positioned 38" aft gets lots of air
during hi-speed taxiing and some while surfing the ground cushion, but
not enough during climbout. Someone mentioned that radiators mounted at mid to
mid-rear wing positions, the pressure is nearly equal front and rear of the radiator
and I believe they were exactly right.
I believe the prop blast has less influence when in climb because there just isn't
enough
low pressure at the rear of the radiator that far back. I cannot climb any distance
without
seeing the temp gage peak out. The radiator might cool well if it were located
further back
near the trail edge of the wing, but I've made my mount-angles only long enough
to position
the radiator a little more rearward or anywhere in between that and the firewall.
So today, I'm going to drain coolant and reposition my radiator forward so that
my
intake is much closer to the standard positive air from the prop and places the
louvers in the
only low pressure available from air going around the radiator. I'm going to continue
the use of the
intake and louvers because I still believe they improve airflow, but that remains
to be proven as well.
Fortunately, it's a simple job that only requires the repositon and new length
hose connectors
so we'll soon find out the difference.
