check with CPS (California Power Systems), if you don't see it online then
call and ask. I'll try to get a part number.

Especially when you consider the ND ignitor chip is notoriously feeble
as well!
I built my system using the the ND pickups and the TP45 modules built
into the same distributor. Seems to be a prettyy bullet proof system
although if I were doing it again I might see if I could buy an after
market crank pick up kit from Summit racing.
Most of their stuff seems to be very high quality and that would avoid
depending on a single dizzy.
Another thought. Using my system there is no reason not to just use both
systems for TO and landing but switch on off in cruise if you wanted to.

Frank and Kelly,
You both put forward a very compelling argument for splitting my system
a little further in than the A-B switch. It is now fed as extension to
the ignition switch, so it'd be foolish not to take that separation
right out to the main and essential buses.
Can't say I've been comfortable since the B-ignition dropped out on the
last flight.
I'm right in the midst of re-wiring connectors so that I can use Paul
Messingers Dual Dizzy system with paired XL600 pickups, TP45 modules,
etc.
Good timing (no pun intended;-)

Kelly I thought I read your post as saying you had a changeover
switch...I.e left or right?.. That would make it a single point of
failure for both systems?
Sorry if I mis read that.

Frank,
This morning you've got me moving my primary A-ignition wire from what was
an A-B switch to the
primary ignition switch and adding a new wire from the B-ignition switch to
its own fuse on the bus.
It's the prudent thing to do, but I am reluctant to run both because there
is still a concern
for overheating the coil selector per the Stratus manual warning.
Most recent guidance by Paul Messinger indicates "Standard" brand XL600
pickups
have a stainless mount plate that avoid cross coupling and provide a good
spark at lower rpm for starting.
This pickup is also not connected to any module so they are cheaper, $75.00
each at NAPA store.

I found it Gary, thanks again for the tip.

This is the route I'm taking, but
you still need the TP45s for each pickup, but you don't have to throw away a
module
to connect with a much improved and robust one. The LX600 is a pickup
from a 1985
Subaru XT. See http://www.smpcorp.com/home.asp and you can find your way
thru
the parts easily.

The probes are past the elbow right after the weld on the stock exhaust. I
think it's about 4.5" from the flange. The gauge manual says to install 4-8"
from the flange.

Frank,
No, didn't change the needle jets. I wanted to do one step at a time.
According to the Bing manual, only the main jet affects things after 3/4
throttle. I think this is where I am in cruise so not sure the needle jet
will make a difference here. What do you mean by running weak? Do you mean
lean? Wouldn't the EGT's show if there were a problem here?
I am no expert, so just curious. Also, is the ignition cut-off at cruise
power OK on the engine, just concerns me?
Hugh

Did you increase the size of the needle jets?...Mine had to go up a few
sizes. You can't simply change the main jet size and assume it will fix
the cruise mixture, the Bings simply don't work that way.
Tie the plane to a post and run it to cruise fower for a minute and cut
the ignition without changine the throttle...The check the plug colour.
You may be running very weak otherwise.

I'm expecting the pickups to arrive Thursday, so the TP45s were mounted
on the heat shields this afternoon. My wiring has been converted to 1/4"
spade
connectors and the rest awaits conversion of a spare ND distributor.
Shouldn't take long, probably into next week, I really have the itch to fly
this thing.

I have the primary on the key switch and the secondary wired separately on a
second switch. I didn't wire the secondary to the tack so if I lost the
primary, would loose the rpm. I check both before and after flight. I have a
hard time turning off a good ignition but you are making me think about it.
As someone said, we have to be comfortable in our own planes.
Thanks for everyone's input and good discussion.
Hugh

Yes but can you do it at VX 30 feet off the deck trying to get over a
very large tree?
What if your "changeover" switch should fail?...You then lose both
systems?
Its your airplane and you need to be comfortable but there is no way
(and I didn't) I would design my system to rely on any shared components
which represent a single point of failure.
I run both systems from an individual single on/off switch (main ign is
from the key switch) and you can check your system on the ground because
when you turn on the second ignition the RPM's pick up unmistakenly...I
wired both mine to a lead going to the tach so you can also read the
RPM's from both systems.....Becareful not to use a chagover swith here
either because if the lead grounds out both systems will die.
Both systems are fed from two independent batteries also. It would take
a mechanical failure (not the alternator because the two battery systems
are isolated) to stop my engine as both systems run all the time.

Amen to that!
Like Larry, I also had a in-flight ign failure, but mine was on the
primary ign and not the backup as Larry's was (nice job Larry being able
to handle that on your first flight!). NOW if I happened to have Larry's
backup ign installed in my plane, and I was running BOTH ign's
continuously and my primary ign then failed I would have fallen form the
sky like a brick, all the while thinking my back up ign was going to
save my butt. Yes people do run both ign's and get way with it, but
coming from a guy that's been there & done that ..... no thanks. I do my
ground check, then take off and shut down #2 and have it there if
needed. It's really no big deal to switch over to the other ign if one
fails. Heck I was at less than 900 feet AGL when my went out. It's
amazing how fast you can react once that large fan stops turning to keep
you cool.
On a side note, this past weekend I added carb overflow tubes to my Bing
carbs to route any fuel overflow harmlessly AWAY from my exhaust system.
Having heard the stories about nasty things happening if you simply
lengthen the existing tubes I wisely (or so I thought) made my existing
tubes dump into approx 1/2" dia tubes. I was thinking this would not
cause a problem with the carb pressures as I had lots of clearance
between the two tubes, and they were only slid together by 1/2" .......
WRONG! All was normal on takeoff until I reached the end of 07, then the
engine started running VERY rough. I then slowly turned and knowing I
would never make it back to 07, landed on 18 while loosing more rpm the
entire way. I think I would rather have my ign fail in flight & switch
over to my back up than do that over again, as it was NOT a fun flight.
After landing I pulled the Bing overflows out of my newly installed
larger dia over flow tubes, then changed my underwear and went for
another flight. All went well that time. So how are others handling this
issue, must one go to 1 inch dia tubes to prevent the pressure change
issue with these tubes? Thanks for listening,
Kelly Meiste
