Hi guys,
Its 58-degrees in Illinois in August no less,
and as I put on a long sleeved sweatshirt,
it gives me pause to wonder if anyone's using
a heater for warming the plane during the winter
like an electric in-line water heater or equivalent?
Couldn't find anything in the archives on this.
The Cessna I flew, we used an electric heater fan, a
type that filled the cowl with warm air and worked
fine, but it was noisy and troublesome to leave running
in the hangar.
Are there any better ideas for keeping the plane warm
in the winter? Would suspect Canadian flyers would
have this issue perfected by now.
As for global warming, bring it on!

Thanks for the Pdf files Larry. They are pretty much what I followed.
Note the diagram shows the connection backwards between the pickup coil
and the TP45...I actually discovered this by accident...Its not problem
it simply won't work one way but will the other.
I jst thought that the new pickup coil you only really need one, and
then use a standard ND pickup for the 2ndary ignition. The only reason
you need the new pick ups for easier starting so you only need
one...Unless you ever feel the need to go flying when one system doesn't
work?...:(((

I'm expecting the pickups to arrive Thursday, so the TP45s were mounted
on the heat shields this afternoon. My wiring has been converted to
1/4" spade connectors and the rest awaits conversion of a spare ND
distributor. Shouldn't take long, probably into next week, I really have
the itch to fly this thing.

The cut off is fine for the few times you will do it. It's the only way
you can do it in fact, unless you use a mixture guage but then you have
to weld threaded ports on the exhaust pipes. A bit of a pain to be
honest.
I found that cruise (42-4400Rpm with my prop pitch) was right around 3/4
throttle...If you are cruising at higher than this (maybe you have more
prop pitch) then your main jet will the deciding factor.
Yes the EGT's should show the problem in that they will rise when
running weak (lean).
Mine are pretty high anyway, I cruise right around 1450F and my probe
(which I calibrated with a handheld unit) is just after the bend.

Frank,
No, didn't change the needle jets. I wanted to do one step at a time.
According to the Bing manual, only the main jet affects things after 3/4
throttle. I think this is where I am in cruise so not sure the needle
jet will make a difference here. What do you mean by running weak? Do
you mean lean? Wouldn't the EGT's show if there were a problem here?
I am no expert, so just curious. Also, is the ignition cut-off at cruise
power OK on the engine, just concerns me?

Did you increase the size of the needle jets?...Mine had to go up a few
sizes. You can't simply change the main jet size and assume it will fix
the cruise mixture, the Bings simply don't work that way.
Tie the plane to a post and run it to cruise fower for a minute and cut
the ignition without changine the throttle...The check the plug colour.
You may be running very weak otherwise.

Been thru 2 winters now in northern IL and haven't seen the need for one
yet.
I get a kick out of pushing the 601 Stratus out of my old hanger on a 25
degree day as the GA boys have been heating their planes for the past 1/2
hour. Then once their pushed out & ready to go they still crank on the
starters forever until their batteries die, & the airport truck has to come
out to jump them.
My 17amp battery will always pop her over immediately without anything
different than what I do in the summer. Other than having to wait 15 minutes
for temps to come up instead of my usual 10 min summer wait.
Gads, seems like only yesterday we were worried about over heating
problems......where'd the summer go?

Frank,
I thought the update with corrections and the piece on testing different
pickups were
most interesting. They kept me from wading into more dangerous OEM choices
based on price alone.
I'm not comfortable with the ND module or the external backup so I'm
displacing
the distributor and all with another distributor, two pickups, etc. This
way, if anything
goes wrong with the new system, I can convert back if necessary. Both
systems seem to work on the ground now, but it's still getting switched out
for the new stuff. Hope it works.
This afternoon, I fed through a separate wire with 7.5-amp fuse to the
double pole double throw A-B switch, discarded the interconnecting wire and
moved A-ignition wire to the larger ignition switch and printed new decals.
The tach wires remain on the other side of the switch as before, to maintain
tach readouts.
Just realizing that being able to run both systems on takoff could be a
serious advantage, as you say in tighter circumstances, then turning off
B-ignition on leveling out.
Thank you,
Larry

Larry,
Compared to real A/C engines everything is pretty cheap, even the $300
standard chip is cheap..Well it is until you realise that they are
feeble and might dump you in the trees worst case, or at best require
periodic replacement!
The ND pickup is actually OK (and relatively valuable on the second hand
market). Its just the ignitor chip that dies.
As to the Stratus 2nd ignition, well that seems to fail at a remarkably
high rate too I've known of about 4 of them incuding mine. I didn't even
bother getting a price just dumped it all and built the twin TP45
system. I'm very happy...At least as long as the dizzy shaft wear does
not become excessive.
Shame we have to do all this "engineering" on a fully "engineered"
package though eh? Wait till you have three in flight valve guide
failures as well. Assuming you live it takes a LOOOONG time to build
faith in the engine even with the Ram fully sorted heads with stepped
valve guides.

On one of my parts engines there is a block heater
in place of the plug with the big allen head tool
hole in it. It may be a Subaru special part.
It looks like a good way to do it. Not too much
chance of it leaking.

I have used a heat lamp under the oil pan on occasion. Seems to help in
colder weather. Haven't yet been able to get her started below -10C, even
that is pushing it. So can't fly on the colder days here, wouldn't try it at
-30C! Also, I have no primer installed.
Frank, thought your comment about having to toggle the secondary ignition on
cold days interesting. Maybe I'll give that a try.
Thought about the in-line water heater but haven't decided on it yet. Maybe
down the road.

Yes it works well!
You kind of have to guess at which part of the cycle to switch it but
once you get it it seems you always know when to toggle.
Weired but it works.
