--> Stratus-List message posted by: "Hinde, Frank George (Corvallis)" <frank.hinde@hp.com> Hello Bill, I believe (which is Engineer speak for "I'm totally out of my field so don't take this as Gospel!) a 1 wire alt is simply that...1 wire to the battery and nothing else...I mean what else could it be? 1) I have always been fascinated with the thrid lead that goes to the starter (really the battery terminal). I belive the theory is that this is a voltage sensing wire...I.e tells the alt what the volts at the battery are to adjust the output accordingly. In other words assumes there is a volt drop throught the big charging wire and so directly to battery. This has always sounded a little hokey to me but this is where I'm "believing" again...:) 2) That caught my eye too and I had the same question. Not sure I totally buy it. In the case of our planes the "light" is never going to fail 'cos its an LED but this is unlikely to be the case in a 1985 Suzuki Samuri...So every time this bulb blows it's a new alternator too?....hmmm...Maybe over a few hours it will die perhaps?...Gee all this takes a lot of 'believing' doesn't it...:) 3)You could well be right and if so I stand corrected. I do note that the one I sent could be shutdown by switching of the field circuit (which happens to be the one the light is plumbed into on our alternators. I don't switch mine because of the warning about the alternator failing. So if the costs are the same the one I sent 'might' be a better deal because it could be shutdown with a small switch in the event of a voltage runaway without a honking great contactor to handle the current if one tried to disconnect the big charging lead...The thought of a 55amp alt a full speed with nowhere to send all that current was a bit much to make me go this route anyway. We have three leads (1 to battery, 1 to ignition (through lamp) and one to starter solenoid). Does a one wire just eliminate the one from the ignition? 2 - I was always curious about the note in the Stratus manual that says " Lamp must be installed" referring to the light tied to +12 v and the "L" lead of the alternator. In the text it also says "NOTE: If you do not connect this to a light, your alternator will fail" - Does that mean if my 12 volt light fails, the alternator will fail also??? 3 - Another Stratus owner sent me a number for the alternator that he used to replace a failed one. He used an AC Delco model 321-1079 which fits a 1985 Suzuki Samurai but the picture I found on the web of that alternator does not look like my alternator.
