Subject: | Stratus engine mount crack |
Stratus List <stratus-list@matronics.com>
--> Stratus-List message posted by: Bryan Martin <bryanmmartin@comcast.net>
I found a crack on my upper right engine mount today. The crack started at
the front end of the upper gusset and extended down and back at a 45 degree
angle for about 3/4 inch. I remembered reading about this on the list some
time ago. I checked the archives and found a few other reported cracks on
the same mount in the same place after about the same number of hours on the
engine. I bought the engine in April 2001, I have 120 hours on the engine
now.
Looks like I'm going to be down for a while for repairs. It's about time for
my annual condition inspection anyway.

Bryan,
Your mount lasted just twice the time that mine did. Stratus was good
enough to send me another
and it wasn't painted, but it did have an elongated gusset that reached
another 3/4". I made another one
using a bent design with longer gussets, TIG welded. The process of
changing one of these isn't difficult
if you support the engine on its oil pan flanges while supporting the
tail with a wooden horse. Things get rather
solid and you use a ratchet strap to tighten the engine to the main
mount while you replace the
broken Stratus mount. Kelly Meiste provided this info to me for
replacing the mount and it worked great.
Took about half an hour,
Larry McFarland

Hi Bryan,
I'd like to better understand where the crack is... is
it on the bracket that is attached to the Cyl. Head?
Or is it on the engine mount itself? (the tubes) A
picture would be nice.
Thanks!

The crack is in the blue bracket attached to the head. Bill Morelli and a
couple of others have reported cracks in the same area. See:

20Crack.htm
The crack on my mount is not as long as the one in these photos and mine is
a bit further forward.

Wow... you've got do to a very good pre-flight
inspection to discover that in time!
Thanks!
