Subject: | A cooling variable |
--> Stratus-List message posted by: Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com>
Hi guys,
The stratus list has been quiet for some time and I thought this might
be of interest to some of you.
I went to the airport to set lifters and I discovered the ram air scat
tube had not been reattached when the cowl was last attached to the
mid-pipe that joins the heat muffler. That's why the coolant had reached
207-degrees F in flight yesterday. On 80-degree days, the coolant never
gets above 195 and I didn't realize the significance of that til today.
The hot muffler is normally washed by cool ram air from near the prop
going thru the heat muff. Excess heat is normally dumped over the side
away from the radiator intake or in winter into the cabin. With the heat
muff disconnected, heat poured right into the radiator intake and the
coolant temperature rose by at least 10-degrees to 207. If the scat tube
had been connected, coolant temps would have been 195-197 degrees.
The .014-gap was good on all but two valves that had to be re-adjusted
for being just one one-thousanth too tight by feeler gage. Cowling
halves were re-attached with scat tube connections in place.
This error on my part provided some useful information on the cooling
effects of having versus not having a heat muffler in place ahead of the
Rabbit type radiator.
Have a good one,
