--> Stratus-List message posted by: "P.H. Raker" <n556p@yahoo.com> Hello, Frank / Larry, Do you have detailed info on how to make the TP 45 conversion? Not being a natural fabricator (one who can make things and/or make them work from a vague description), I would need info on what needs to be made, how to make it, what needs to be purchased, how to assemble the purchased and fabricated parts, how the whole is supposed to fit into and work with the original Stratus-supplied parts, what original parts I no longer need, what original parts (installed) I need to remove. Pictures and/or drawings would help. I bought the dual ignition option but was disappointed to find that it came in a box with rather poor instructions on how to hook it up (not certain that I understand it all). I was expecting an engine with dual ignition (installed & ready to run). I still don't think that expectation was too far out of line. Note that my engine has not yet run. I don't yet have an electrical system, so haven't yet hooked up or even installed any of the ignition stuff that didn't come mounted on the engine. Rather than clutter the list with those details, you may send the info to me at this address. Thanx muchly. If not, Id suspect the ignition module because it can become temperature-sensitive and loose it until cooling takes place. My solid-state ignition module did this on the second flight last year, but itd then run a while afterward until it got hot again. Havent had problems with the replacement. Not likely the coil would perform the same way, but its a little easier to check. If youre still flying with the Denso module(s), they are somewhat delicate, expensive and prone to quit, but I dont know if they could be heat sensitive and become intermittent. The ability to troubleshoot and switch wires becomes another good reason to have dual ignition installed. If you have no dual modules, this would be a good time to buy a GM TP-45 module as a replacement. It would mount outside the distributor, but be more reliable. If you need info on this, I can send you the sheets. Larry McFarland do not archive

    Subject: Consuming Oil
--> Stratus-List message posted by: "Bill Morelli" <billvt@together.net> Hey Stratus guys, My Stratus has been consuming oil for a good amount of time. It is using about 1 quart every 6 hours of hobbs time. The engine has 432 hours on it. This is not a new issue but I'm trying to figure what I will do if it gets much worse. Engine had RAM heads installed at 261 hours. The last time I checked compression (at 378 hours) all was good. Compressions were about where they had always been. It was burning oil at that time. This engine was built up by Reiner just before Mykal bought the company. Not sure if he did things any differently than Mykal. Before I try and contact Mykal, I wanted to ask some questions of you guys. - Is anyone else having an oil consumtion issue? - Does anyone know if ther was ever a TBO estimate placed on the Stratus? - When these engines are built up for aircraft use, do they get bored out and fittted with oversize pistons? That would probably preclude the ability to bore it out again!! I would like to know what I can do to the cylinders if anything. Anyway, the thing is running great and still has plenty of power as it always has. The last time I cleaned the bottom of the aircraft was during my annual at 378 hours and now the bottom is pretty coated with exhaust crud. Regards, Bill

--> Stratus-List message posted by: Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com> Phil, I'm sending you the same info that was sent to Don Walker. If you have the solid state ign with pickup at the flywheel, you'll need more info but that's ok. Goes as follows: Both TP45s are mounted just below my coils on the firewall shelf. The pair of wires from each pickup in the distributor are extended to these external modules. I've got two pickups in my distributor and one pickup at the flywheel that feeds a solid state module. I use one in the distributor and the flywheel pickup as my regular pair. If one goes, I can switch wires and run the remaining two. If you decide to put dual pickups in your distributor, don't swap out the distributor for another while you're doing this. The flyweights aren't the same one to another and I made that mistake, wondering why the engine just didn't seem to run as well as the original matched for the engine. First link shows two TP45s mounted in pieces of bent aluminum that are attached to the same bolts that hold coils A & B. Second link is standard Denso module and pickup. Third link is the module removed and dual pickups with wires extended from the distributor to the TP45s on the firewall. http://www.macsmachine.com/images/electrical/full/TP45mounts.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/electrical/full/distributor-at-plug-1b.gif http://www.macsmachine.com/images/electrical/full/dualdizzy2.gif Pickups are the part that brushes closely to capture the signal from the rotating 4-vane reluctor that your rotor mounts on. The Denso module is the kidney shaped plastic cover protected piece on the opposing side. The two wires you'll have to extend and put shrink wrap around will be from the pickups. On the DUAL DIZZY.pdf attachment, read carefully thru page 8. From there, his heat sink and wiring arrangement differ from my sketch, wiring and positioning on the 601/Stratus. The DUAL DIZZY MODS NOTES.pdf attachment describes incorrect terminal markings for the TP45 in his previous document. My sketch is correct and his guidance is essentially a great piece of work, if not an overstated exactitude. TP45s at NAPA are about $35, Modules from Denso were $175. The TP45s are nearly indestructable and the Densos are somewhat delicate where stray voltage is concerned. As you work thru this, if you have questions, please ask. Larry McFarland P.H. --> Stratus-List message posted by: rueffy@jetthrust.com Hi Bill - I can answer some questions. After 250 hours im not having any excessive oil consumption. I cant remember where I saw it but I believe stratus have an estimated TBO of 1000hours - im pretty sure I saw that in the stratus publications I have here.
