Reiner told me personally that he wouldn't be surprised if the engines got close to 3000 hours. Of course he also told me my engine was "perfect". Then came the three valve guide failures, etc. Mine has cylinders .020 oversize. No oil consumption. don walker ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Morelli<mailto:billvt@together.net> To: stratus-list<mailto:stratus-list@matronics.com> Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2005 7:56 PM Subject: Stratus-List: Consuming Oil --> Stratus-List message posted by: "Bill Morelli" <billvt@together.net<mailto:billvt@together.net>> Hey Stratus guys, My Stratus has been consuming oil for a good amount of time. It is using about 1 quart every 6 hours of hobbs time. The engine has 432 hours on it. This is not a new issue but I'm trying to figure what I will do if it gets much worse. Engine had RAM heads installed at 261 hours. The last time I checked compression (at 378 hours) all was good. Compressions were about where they had always been. It was burning oil at that time. This engine was built up by Reiner just before Mykal bought the company. Not sure if he did things any differently than Mykal. Before I try and contact Mykal, I wanted to ask some questions of you guys. - Is anyone else having an oil consumtion issue? - Does anyone know if ther was ever a TBO estimate placed on the Stratus? - When these engines are built up for aircraft use, do they get bored out and fittted with oversize pistons? That would probably preclude the ability to bore it out again!! I would like to know what I can do to the cylinders if anything. Anyway, the thing is running great and still has plenty of power as it always has. The last time I cleaned the bottom of the aircraft was during my annual at 378 hours and now the bottom is pretty coated with exhaust crud. Regards, Bill

Doesn't matter if I'm running my summer 20W-50, or my winter 10W-30. Yeah my planes exhaust side has the crub underneath also. The maintenance guide I received with my engine only specifies "countless hours of enjoyment" (maintenance guide stops after 1,500 enjoyable hours). Kelly (125 somewhat enjoyable hours) do not achieve

    Subject: Re: Consuming Oil
--> Stratus-List message posted by: Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com> Bill, I found a bit which might be of interest when checking compression. (after removing all plugs and disconnecting coil wires) The Haynes repair manual describes doing a compression check on each cylinder with a threaded plug adapter pressure gage rather than the hand held type, and cranking 4 full compression strokes on each one. "Low pressure on the first stroke with increasing pressure on successive strokes indicates bad rings." "Low pressure on the first stroke with no successive increase in pressure indicates leaking valves or head gasket." You might also check the "pvc hose" that clears valve cover pressure to the carb inlet as it may be sucking spray oil rather than excess case atmosphere. Worn valve guides will sometimes cause smoke in the exhaust at start up, but rings will smoke constantly, if at all. My Stratus puts a thin oily soot on the belly of the plane that blackens lead edges of my step tubes etc and consistently burns about 1/8 quart each 10 hours of operation. I've only 70+ hours, so it's scarcely enough time to know more. On the 601 Stratus Installation sheet, "Due to its simple design, the Stratus EA81 is easy to operate with an estimated TBO of 1,000 hours." --> Stratus-List message posted by: "Don Walker" <d3dw@msn.com> Frank, Larry, I took the coil wire and attached it directly to the primary coil instead of the HV diode pack. Then held the distributor end next to the frame to check spark. It's there. But it sparks when I turn on and off the ignition switch...not when cranking the engine. Actually it sparks when I turn OFF the ignition switch. Looks like this means the ignition module in the distributor is bad. What's it sound like to you guys? don ----- Original Message ----- From: Hinde, Frank George (Corvallis)<mailto:frank.hinde@hp.com> To: stratus-list@matronics.com<mailto:stratus-list@matronics.com> Sent: Friday, September 23, 2005 4:00 PM Subject: RE: Stratus-List: Cylinder head removal --> Stratus-List message posted by: "Hinde, Frank George (Corvallis)" <frank.hinde@hp.com<mailto:frank.hinde@hp.com>> Oh yes the standard subaru (ND)ignitor chips are pretty feeble...Its a matter of when they fail rather than IF. I have heard a number of the back up ignitions failing as well. Sounds like a weak spark, Have you checked the reluctor gap? Usually if the chip is going to fail it either works or it doesn't. Seems this one is working partially. Are you sure all your wiring is intact?..For example the wire from the ignition switch? Have you tried connecting the battery directly to the igntion? This would remove the ignition switch and wiring from the equation. Yes you could change the coils over too, and remove the HV diode pack by connecting the coil directly to the rotor cap. Good luck...Sounds like you should really get yourself a twin TP 45 setup. They are pretty easy to make. I mounted 3 TP 45's on a plate on the firewall. The center chip is a spare...If one fails away from home I simply unplug the bad one and move it to the spare...Not that one has ever failed mind you. Remember to keep the pickup you will need it (and a second one) to drive the TP 45 module. Now it is not firing at all. I installed a new rotor and cap. Fuel pump is flowing full. Plugs look good. It is not a plug or plug wire since the whole system goes dead at once. The dual ignition is installed but the pick-up is disconnected. Both coils are still connected to the ignition selector disc, but in effect I have no secondary to check. Mine quit working at 40 hours right when Stratus was sold and Mikel was not willing to replace the secondary module, so I don't do business with him any more. --> Stratus-List message posted by: Larry McFarland <larrymc@qconline.com> Don, Having circuit from ignition switch and coil, but not with the Module suggests this would be a good time to replace the module with a TP45. This repair/conversion should not be hard if your wires are all accessible. You're going to have to splice a pair of longer wires from your pickup in the distributor to the TP45, so I'd suggest you need a small coil of silver bearing solder (Radio Shack), shrink wrap and Tefzel wire. A module failure does suggest a serious need for dual ignition, but I'd make it go first with one TP45 and do conversion to dual as a separate effort to keep the current electronic module rewire problems separate from the logistics and effort of conversion to dual pickups. Subject: Belt Failure
--> Stratus-List message posted by: rueffy@jetthrust.com Hi Gang. I was down from BC in Arlington today to check out a similar aircraft to mine (not a stratus though). While I was talking to the guy he was telling me about a buddy of his in Arlingotn with an Avid Flyer, stratus driven who is the president of a chapter there. He reported a stratus belt failure 800ft off the deck and was able to make a successfull 180 back to the runway. Apparently it was at a mountainous airport. We were talking about belt failures a couple of weeks ago and im not sure if I remember reading about this one. Does anyone remember this occuring within the last 12 months and perhaps if the guy is on this list he could share what if anything he found that might have caused the failure? If no-one knows anything on the list here I might chase the guy up and talk to him on the phone and post what I find.
