    Subject: Carb Elbows

--> Stratus-List message posted by: "Weston, Jim" <Jim.Weston@delta.com> I didn't have any problems with plastic shavings, but I did end up replacing my black ABS plastic elbows with white PVC ones that I fabricated to look just like the originals. I tried doing without them altogether, as has been recommended here, but my installation had items in the way of the straight out filter. The reason that I swapped was because the high priced fuel that I was using (Amoco Ultimate; it's a top name here in the southeast) had additives that were softening the plastic at the bottom where it attaches to the carb. It softened so much that the inward airflow had caused the plastic to flow into a big bulge that was pulled up against the small vent holes at the bottom rear of the carb intake. This was causing a rough idle that I could never solve until I found this problem. The PVC is unaffected by anything so far and has been working great for a couple hundred hours. I've now re-run my line to below the FW, and trashed the elbow. As a side note has anyone ever noticed all the plastic shavings and fine chips inside these plastic elbows from the machine work done on them. Would have been nice if Stratus would have at least blew them out with an air hose before installing them on the engines. Thanks again for the tip! --> Stratus-List message posted by: "Hinde, Frank George (Corvallis)" <frank.hinde@hp.com> Ron Carr at Ram nots that he bores the motor with a plate bolted to the block to simulate the head bolt torque. I very much doubt Stratus does the same, so I wonder if your bores are out of round leading to high blow by and the reverse, i.e burning the oil? Reiner told me personally that he wouldn't be surprised if the engines got close to 3000 hours. Of course he also told me my engine was "perfect". Then came the three valve guide failures, etc. Mine has cylinders .020 oversize. No oil consumption. don walker ----- Original Message ----- From: Bill Morelli<mailto:billvt@together.net> To: stratus-list<mailto:stratus-list@matronics.com> Sent: Saturday, September 24, 2005 7:56 PM Subject: Stratus-List: Consuming Oil --> Stratus-List message posted by: "Bill Morelli" <billvt@together.net<mailto:billvt@together.net>> Hey Stratus guys, My Stratus has been consuming oil for a good amount of time. It is using about 1 quart every 6 hours of hobbs time. The engine has 432 hours on it. This is not a new issue but I'm trying to figure what I will do if it gets much worse. Engine had RAM heads installed at 261 hours. The last time I checked compression (at 378 hours) all was good. Compressions were about where they had always been. It was burning oil at that time. This engine was built up by Reiner just before Mykal bought the company. Not sure if he did things any differently than Mykal. Before I try and contact Mykal, I wanted to ask some questions of you guys. - Is anyone else having an oil consumtion issue? - Does anyone know if ther was ever a TBO estimate placed on the Stratus? - When these engines are built up for aircraft use, do they get bored out and fittted with oversize pistons? That would probably preclude the ability to bore it out again!! I would like to know what I can do to the cylinders if anything. Anyway, the thing is running great and still has plenty of power as it always has. The last time I cleaned the bottom of the aircraft was during my annual at 378 hours and now the bottom is pretty coated with exhaust crud. Regards, Bill

The plastic bulged so much the jets were totally covered. Currently doing my ann inspection so I haven't run it yet with the elbows removed. It will be interesting to see if my idle smoothes out.
