Frank,
I know that this may be a stupid question. Just trying to help with
ideas. But do you still have the rubber gasket in the oil filler cap?
Mine gets stuck to the top of the filler tube sometimes, and I've almost
lost it a couple of times.
I just know that you've got something different going on, because that
is one problem that my Stratus has not had. It is dry as a bone after
235 hours. I do dump my crankcase vent out of a tube at the bottom of
the firewall, rather than feeding it back into the left carb, as was the
original design.
Hope this helps some,
Jim Weston

Unfortunatly these motors don't have a vacuum set up for the crankcase
fumes so pressure will come out the breather hose...or anywhere else for
that matter...:)

Possibly check the crankcase breather system? If you don't have good
crankcase ventilation you'll build internal pressure, which will
exacerbate any potential leaks.

Morning all,
Just lately my alternator has become erratic, i.e the warning light
would come on accasionally...Looked like a brush problem as the issue
was intermittent in nature.
I stripped the alt last night and discovered the slow oil leak from the
filler cap had been lubricating the back of the alternator. This oil
found its way to the brushes and make a thick paste made of oil and
brush material.
This coverd the slip rings and lifeted the brushes off the slip rings.
At least that's the theory, when I get it cleaned up and installed we
will know for sure.
Which brings me to the root cause...For a few years I have been
wrestling with squuzing the tabs on the filler cap to get the right
tension to prevent the leak...Eventually I just ignored the leak which
clearly was not a great idea.
So I wonder if any off you have a real solution for the leaking oil cap?
Thanks
Frank

Frank,
If you still have the rubber gasket under the cap check to see if it is
lubricated with white lithium grease. My engine came with this gasket lubed,
and I reapply a little at every annual. Seems to help the cap turn and seal.
No leaks at 130 hours,
Kelly
