Subject: | Carburetor Elbows Cracked |

Hi Guys,
There has been an slight increase in the EGTs indicated, so I took a
closer look.
I inspected the air intake elbows on the Bing carburetors. Both the ABS
plastic elbows were cracked twice at 180-degrees each side where they
clamp to the ridged sleeves on the Bing carburetors. I purchased two
1-1/2-inch P-traps made of PVC at Lowe's for $2.50 each and match-cut
them to the cracked ABS pieces. The more expensive P-traps were thicker
and have a smoother flow than the $1.77-cent P-traps. I used a Dremel
with a -inch sanding drum to grind the straight joint from a 1.90
diameter to a 1.96-inch max taper-diameter about 3/8-inch long. This fit
the Bing perfectly and with a clamp, tightened as before. The foam air
filter was clamped tight, but should have ridges or indents to secure
its grip. One of the elbows had to be drilled 7/16-inch at its side and
be tapped with a -18 NPT to accept the return tube fitting for valve
cover tube connections. The hardest part was getting all the gritty
white bits of PVC out of my clothing, glasses and hair. This would take
a vacuum sweeper.
They're a perfect fit and the angle of the filters are exactlly the same
as before, so I suspect the originals were P-traps in their former
incarnation.
