Bryan, When I replaced my seal, I found that the large aluminum spacer that goes between the flywheel and crankshaft had a groove worn into it from the rubber seal. This spacer should be steel to prevent this but it is not. So not only does the seal wear, but the surface the seal rides on also wears. When inserting the new seal, I did not press it in all the way but rather left is out about a 16th of an inch or so to let the new seal have an undamaged surface to ride on. There was plenty of room behind the flywheel to allow the seal to be sticking out this amount. My next problem will be when the seal starts leaking again, I will have a second groove in the spacer and won't be able to pick a new spot. There are a couple of things I could do. One is to have a steel spacer made. Probably expensive and would add a bit of weight. The second is to place a stainless sleeve over the spacer. I was at my local bearing store one day and saw a brochure (which I can't find now) for a very thin stainless sleeve that would fit over the spacer to repair the damage. The sleeves come in all different sizes and are very thin so as not to change the diameter very much. They are made just for repairing worn shafts and I think would work on the Stratus spacer. I will try and find the brochure so I can pass the company name along to you guys. If anyone would like, I have photos showing the spacer damage that I had and I would be glad to send them. Just send me a note off the zenith list. I can also send a write up I did on how I replaced the seal.
