Kelly,
I have a custom radiator where the stock Stratus muffler is, with an
inlet duct coming from the stock Pelican cowling opening of 4" x 12"
underneath in front. The oil pan is in the way, so it penetrates the
cooling duct. I used half of the opening for the radiator duct and left
the other half open for airflow over the oil pan and exhaust. After
many attempts at making an exit duct to pull more air out (it's wide
open underneath like the zeniths) I just increased the inlet for the
radiator duct by 1". So now I have 3" x 12" for coolant and 1" x 12"
for oil. The coolant temps are solid but oil creeps up to 250 after
climbs (then I throttle back for a while and they come down). That's at
noon on 100 degree days. Anything less, and it's fine. An oil cooler
would be nice but it's ok for now. I'm still planning on a completely
new FWF when I figure that all out. Then I'll make the cooling even
better.

Hi Gary,
When you find the time can you let us know what you did to help the
cooling
issues you were fighting?
Did you have to go to an oil cooler?
Kelly
Do not achieve

Thanks for the update Gary, sounds like you have things pretty well sorted
out.
If anyone is curious to see Gary's bird (and Stratus engine installation)
check it out here.....

Hope to see some updated photos of your installation soon.
Thanks for the post,
Kelly

I recently started polishing my 601-HDS and am now finished with the right
wing from wing tip to the splice area. My plane has never been painted,
except for the fiberglass pieces.
I took 2 cross-country trips recently and noticed that the plane has a new
tendency to drift left when flying hands off, so I keep correcting myself. It
dawned on me that the unpolished left wing now has more drag than the
polished right wing and I noticed my airspeed to be a tad higher. What a hoot!
I
will start on the left wing before finishing the right wing so restore the
balance.
No Subaru issues. The carbs' jets are set at the rich setting for the
summer and I cruise at 3800RPM (95+ mph). No need for speed here, just enjoying
the cruising around.
Richard (601-HDS at 280 hours)

I had a few guys tell me I was crazy for trying to start my engine without a
prop until I did it. Then all I could do was smile and say, "I told you
so."

Andy,
Congratulations. It sounds like you're getting close. Remember that
this engine is one that
you can run or tune with the prop removed. I take mine off each time I
go for a check of timing
or carb adjustments etc. Much safer. Gets the Lyc and Continental guys
excited when they see
this being done.

Yea Gary, it was smooth and sounded great. I didi keep a close eye on the
temps. Since I did not have a prop on it and not much air moving across the
radiator I could only run about 14 or so minutes at a time. As soon as the
temp got to 185 I would shut it down. Hope to get to run it again before
too much longer with the prop and see how that goes.

It has been quiet, but I did get to finally start my engine for the
first
time a few weeks ago. What a rush!
