About to adjust valves and want to know when I should check the clearance. Do
I rotate the engine until the compression stroke, the power stroke or does it
matter?

Hi John,
>From my journal, I found the following which might help. You're going for
the compression stroke.
To adjust the valves on the Subaru. After removing the cowl, the distributor
cap, the spark plugs and the valve covers. The prop was rotated to get #1
cylinder on top while aligning the distributor rotor with #1 spark wire. The
.014 gage was slipped into the intake rocker, then the exhaust, then the
.016. The rocker nut was loosened, the screw adjusted and set so the .014
gage was a slip fit and the .016 gage was not. The nut was snugged,
rechecked and tightened. This repeated for cylinders #3, #2 and #4.
Note the cylinder is identified by the number cast into each cylinder
looking down on the case. I've marked the numbers on the distributor to keep
things from being confused. Plug wires are also marked.
