I remember this one fairly well. The old guy that owned the airplane had it stored over in Watsonville. He had John Behreis (not sure how to spell John's last name) helping him get it back into the air. For some reason, they took off from Watsonville to fly over to San Jose, where John had his hangar. It's not clear what they needed but it was obvious John was flying and heading to his hangar. As they were lining up for about a 6 mile final (straight in) they lost power. Several witnesses watched as John was going to land it on a really big street, Santa Teresa Blvd in south San Jose. However, at the last moment, some kids appeared in a cross walk or something to that effect and witnesses say he turned immediately and headed for a different residential street. They almost made it but one wing hit a tree and knocked them to the ground right in someones front yard. Fire happened immediately on impact. The old guy that owned the airplane was dead on impact as I recall. However, John lived for a few hours if memory serves me correctly. He was burned very very bad. Seems to me, the FAA took the engine and ran it somewhere and it ran fine. I always suspected a plugged fuel line, after all, the plane had been in storage for years. You just don't know what could be lurking in there.... John's fine little Tailwind sat in a hangar in Watsonville for a few months before I ferried it to a museum in Pawnee City, Nebraska where it sits today. It was a fine airplane with an 0-200. Can't remember the n number off the top of my head tonight. Anyway, that airplane was built by Ed Todd ( I think I have the name right) back in 1956 and it had about 2200 hours on it. It was one of the first Tailwinds I ever flew beside back in 1974. I was amazed at how fast that little boxy airplane was with only a Cont 0-200. The other Tailwind that was with us that day belonged to Ralph Korngold. Both of those airplanes were really nice and they were the inspiration for me to get a Tailwind to fly while I was building my Long Ez. Man, am I glad I bought my first Tailwind.... It taught me right away what a great little design it really is... Although I finished my Long Ez airframe, when I had to sell one or the other, I kept my Tailwind and the rest is history... I did not know that John was that industrious. I got even with John by putting 1000 hrs on his plane too just hope i don't die and leave it to one of you guys. Please promise me you won't let my wife sell it to Weav as he would then sell all his others and terrorize the skies. N9052C was registered to Charles Wilford nearby in Naperville, IL in 1969, my TW was there with 180 hp and the next highest was 135hp, must have made quite a stir in Rockford. Funny thing is that i flew there in a Cougar (N6484D) and don't remember seeing my TW!!! The other interesting fact is that there were 26 TW's at Rockford in 1969 same as last year at Oshkosh. Dennis in Chicago N374G changed to N4JB changed to N564DF, The first 2 N #'s are now on jets but i feel just as fast coming into the Chicago class B from 14,000' chasing 737's. ----- Original Message ----- From: jrs14855 To: TailwindForum@yahoogroups.com Sent: Monday, September 29, 2003 4:36 PM Subject: [TailwindForum] old tailwinds Dennis- I missed your comment about who built 11N. John Benjamin, who was the second owner of your Tailwind was also the second owner of 11N. I had several rides in 11N and one in yours when John owned it. 11N had a hot rodded C90 and was a real performer. It would indicate 165 at low alt with two on board at high cruise power and would top 185-190. John Benjamin sold 11N to the guy who flipped it over. John put 1000 hours on 11N in five years. He then built a vari eze and a long eze both of which were trophy winners. He was building a Glassair III when he passed away. I used to go to Lancaster a lot and usually found John in the coffee shop where we talked about Tailwinds etc. ADVERTISEMENT To unsubscribe from this group, send an email to: TailwindForum-unsubscribe@yahoogroups.com The Tailwind Forum group site is: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/TailwindForum ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ Time: 05:38:58 PM PST US From: "flamini2" Subject: Tailwind-List: Re: Fw: Late Wednesday Edition --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "flamini2" Earl; that was pretty funny, esp Bill Gates in the lower left corner. Sure would not have put my flying money with them.
