Crissy Field had Beech D-50's (civilian designation) there at the time, We used to go to Napa think it was Joneses for lunch in the "T-Bones". A year later I was flying them for a living out of ABQ for the Atomic Energy Commission ~~Brought back some memories!~~But not as good as talking to Steve W. a few times! Culvers is why we moved back to Wisconsin! Can you banner tow with a Tailwind?!? I've been flying so much I have not had much time to write. To the guys not finished: keep at it. I plan to start another one after the new year. I'll use the wing kit again, as I think the way I did the tip gives me a little slower stall speed than most and I still seem to have a pretty good top end speed. Stall with flaps is at 49mph indicated, and I'm getting about 175mph at 2550 with a lycoming E2D 150hp with no wheel pants or gear fairings. I've had to put an new battery in it. The wheelchair battery I had gave out; maybe too many bounced landings shook lose the plates? Went with an Oddessy this time. Friday morning I leave for Kitty Hawk. I plan to fly the tailwind to Michigan and meet up with a friend there. The rest of the trip will be on commercial airlines since I don't want to get stuck in any weather. I feel very connected to the Wrights and what they did. I've spent quite a few years working in bike shops. My wife and I rode a tandem bike across the country, and when I was a little younger, I did some bike racing. Never did I every think I would build an airplane, or have such an interest in flying. About 4 years ago I took a flight with my brother in his Cessna 120. It was the closest thing ever to what I feel when I bike. Now I've built a plane designed by a man who had his ticket signed by a Wright. This coming week I have the privilage to experience a recreation of the first flight on the spot where it happened. For me its like going to see the Tour de France (never been to France). Now I live on a runway, and the midwest is small. My bike fits in my airplane. I am a lucky man. Here is a web site that we will be maintaining about the first flight celebration. My friend John Chapman is who I am traveling with. This site is his project: http://www.geocities.com/airknocker46/index.html Look for updates daily.
