DO use lines from the original post to help "tune in" the reader to the topic at hand, but be selective. The impact that quoting the entire original post has on the size of the archive can not be overstated! In addition to archive considerations, please keep in mind that, when you don't trim all the extraneous stuff from the post you're replying to, it makes it quite difficult for those of us on digest mode to read the list. A few lines of new message, followed by pages & pages of quoted text and the message footer repeated over & over before one comes to the next message, does not make for a good reading experience. Those of us on digest mode will be forever grateful if you trim everything that's not relevant to your reply. -Dan ________________________________ Message 3 _____________________________________ - Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: Dick Alkire?? From: Fred Weaver --> Tailwind-List message posted by: Fred Weaver Thanks for the number Lou!.... I heard from Wally Critchlow too... that guy is heading for Florida for the winter. I could feel his "stress" from here. hahaha... BTW, I think Jerry is having more fun with your airplane than the previous owner... I think someone got it that truly appreciates the effort that went into building it.. Maybe you should go fly with Jerry and get him used to working with the charts while he is airborne. :) How far apart are you two anyway? I'm off to the airport... Have to put the spinner back on the Tailwind. The sky is beautiful and I just know I'm going to get some of it later this afternoon.. The New Year is almost here.... Is everyone ready? Yeeeehaaaaaaa! Weav I guess this is where I'm supposed to say.... do not archive ? Anyway, it's Russ Hasenbalg's W8 which won an Award at Oshkosh a few years ago for Outstanding Restoration or something like that. Maybe Danner could get Russ to write up some of the nice features and share some pictures of the interior etc.. It was a special airplane and the people that are thinking about building with smaller engines should have the info on it. I can't emphasize enough....it was a REAL nice airplane. Light, straight, fast, comfortable, etc etc... A real Jewel. I know that during the restoration process, Russ added W10 tips to the airplane which allowed it to climb better and fly faster too. Power was a Continental C90. This was a real nice airplane but Russ liked to have too much fun with it.... It's a great story and one I will let Russ tell you ......or else he will have to give me permission..hahahaha... Let's just say, it's not a good thing to chase ice fishermen while it is snowing.. the horizon sorta goes away and one could end up sliding all over the place on a Iced over lake.... get it? Now you all know why Russ has a nice newly built W10 Trike. Get the fuselage level and do the same with the stab or O degrees . Both pipes cross in front of the oil sump but then turn downward and exit the cowling sort of like on the later Cherokees. I have not had good experience with long tail pipes in the cowling and I also like to get the heat out as quickly as possible. This system has been used for a couple hundred hours and didn't have a bit of problem. You're also correct in that there is no fuel in the wings and no tapered tips. I use a modified T-18 tip from ACS. If I knew what I know now, I would have built my own and they probably would have had a slight taper to them. But I already had the T-18 tips and so used them. Come on down whenever. I'm at the airport most days. Just let me know when. Where is it located in Springfield? i would like to stop by to see it. Looks like no fuel in wings and no tapered tips, right? I think that it is about an inch from the bolt hole to the top of the top longeron, but it's been a while since I worked on that end of the plane. I'm hoping that this works out about right, but I won't know until after I fly it. So the exhaust will stick down and out thru a hole or two in the bottom cowling? Well ahead of the firewall? Horizontal stab, measured at the outboard tip, inboard of the elevator arm. 1.5 degrees down in front. Bottom of root rib, 1.2 degrees down at front. Bottom longeron, 1.5 degrees down at front. This might vary as the sheetmetal prevented getting on the longeron itself. The airplane was sitting on the hanger floor with about a half tank of gas. If you fly it without the wheel pants, the drag of the wheels will pull the nose down quite a bit more than expected.
