Wicks can't tell me if their homebuilt set of dynofocal mounts EM100-005 is ok for my 150 hp O-320. Has anyone used them? Paul

This is a picture of N6PJ taken this morning. For the last six days., my airport has been under a heavy sheet of ice. My response is to stay at home in front of the fire, a hot toddy close at hand. But if I wanted to fly off of this stuff, would it be particularly dangerous? What are the special techniques for Tailwinding on ice. You Baraboo guys should have all the answers. Jerry

--> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Christian Bobka" <bobka@charter.net> You won't have any brakes. None. The tailwheel will have no effect. It may as well be a free swivelling caster. If you have a crosswind, make sure it is from the right. This way as you raise the tail (aka lower the nose), the gyroscopic precession of the prop disc will have a vector 90 degrees from the point the force is applied, which is the top of the disc, so the effect will be that as you raise the tail, the fuselage will swing right. With a crosswind from the right, trying to swing the tail left while weathervaning, they will more or less cancel. The first 100 feet of the takeoff roll is the most challenging until the rudder takes holt. Use the same logic for landing but now the tail is coming down so the crosswind should be from the left. I flew a lusombe through the aftermath of a bunch of ice storms in Dallas, Texas, fifteen or so years ago and this was the only way to deal with the ice sheet on the runway. I learned a lot about applied physics. At least you got the hangar door open. It makes the case for a bifold door. The doors in texas are pretty much all on tracks and the tracks freeze up with water, locking the door shut with ice. chris ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jerry Hey" <j-winddesigns@thegrid.net> Subject: Tailwind-List: Icy runway > This is a picture of N6PJ taken this morning. --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Jim and Donna Clement" <168x@merr.com> Pretty much what Chris said, no braking what so ever. Even with the throttle all the way closed it will roll forever and hard to slow down. On landing with any crosswind, it will weathervane into the wind and start sliding sideways, then all you can do is ride it out and hope you don't hit something. If you are on a frozen lake with smooth ice you can go full power and pretty much fly out of a slide but always land straight into the wind and never toward shore. Ivo's are notorious for falling apart. Ultralites used to use my runway back in California and I witnessed several Ivo failures. Amazing they are still in business. You know Bob......we all were concerned for you when we saw those blades at Baraboo.. But, we thought we might learn something from you. What we learned is..........they have killed in the past and they just shouldn't be on our airplanes. We are sure happy you got to take the picture. Please don't be tempted to fix them and use them again. Get a prop from a friend and use it while you get one on order. So glad to see that you could type an email after your visit to your Granddaughter....... Bob: I have heard (or read) a number of times that Ivo props and Lycoming engines don't mix well, with the prop coming out the worst for the wear. You seem to be proving it. Get a good wood or composit prop: Sterba, Catto, Prince, Culver, or Felix all have good (some better depending on opinion) props for tailwinds. --> Tailwind-List message posted by: "Bob Conner" <bdconner@hotmail.com> Grandson!!!!!!! I had a friend get my old wood prop and fly it down to me. Put it on and flew it back. It was 68 in. by 69 pitch. It was on the plane when I bought it. It would only turn up to about 2300. I chopped it down to 66 in. and took about 3/8 off the chord. It will turn 2500 now and the oil temp runs about 10 degrees cooler. Doesn't climb out nearly as good, seems to run pretty close to the same speed maybe a little slower. I need to check the fuel tommorrow, but I think it burns more fuel with the wood prop................Bob 149 From: Fred Weaver <MYTYWEAV@EARTHLINK.NET> Subject: Re: Tailwind-List: I used to like my Ivo Prop You know Bob......we all were concerned for you when we saw those blades at Baraboo..But, we thought we might learn something from you.
