George; Awhile back there was an articule in the Tailwind Times of a light
W-8 being built somewhere in the SW, could have been in Arizona, which had
details of the trim located under the floor. JohnD

The plug work for the new W-10 cowling is well under
way. Several areas of the existing cowl require rework
to obtain a more consistant shape. The left side of
the cowl near the air inlet was 1/4" low causing the
tunnel to appear to have a dogleged shape. The flat
surface on the left was cut loose and repositioned,
then the tunnel was reformed to obtain equal
curvature. The area of the air inlet was moved forward
to match the right side of the cowl and both air
inlets have been recontoured to make them match. A
preformed bow at the firewall is being molded in to
match what builders are doing to the fuselage and
windshield area. More pictures and progress reports
will follow.

Consider putting the trim handle between the seats and
the spring under the seats. Also my flap handle is a
Ford Parking brake handle with an extension welded on!

Brian, that is an interesting looking trim lever. What is the secret of the
way it is mounted?
The cowl is looking good!

I did run out of nose down trim on my way to
Airventure 03 with minimum fuel and full baggage. Had
to hold slight nose down pressure the last 10 minutes
of the longest leg. It makes me think that I might be
able to raise the leading edge of the H-stab a little
bit. Otherwise it has worked perfectly.

A small arm of .019 Piper chanel prevents the large
washer from turning when the handle is rotated against
the leather. It keeps the tension the same no matter
how much you use the trim. I haven't had to tighten
the bolt in six years of flying my Tailwind.

Brian, I like the cowl and I know how much work it has been to
develop. It looks very clean. When the time comes can you supply the
cowl to me without the tunnel? The rotary's radiator fits under the
engine with an inlet scoop just below the spinner. The rad will have
adjustable louvers that will open into the air stream under the rad.
All of this is to be blended with the cowl belly. If I mock up the
inlet scoop and belly portion and bring it to you, would you be
interested in doing the modifications? Jerry

It might be easier for me to fly up to your shop and
do the work there. I'm doing that for Rick on the O&O
II nose bowl.

That's a manifold pressure gage reading about 30".
It's parked at Metro Airport near Indianapolis.

Looks pretty good Brian, let me know how much a cowl will weigh when you
finish. I already have a Maden cowl. I am trying to make my w10 as light as
possible. Alex
